Fernando, while on assignment with Maine, produced 13 points (4-7 FG, 3-6 FT), 14 rebounds, two blocks and a steal over 23 minutes in Thursday's 86-79 home win over Capital City. The big center was part of an overall defensive effort that held Capital City to only 39 percent shooting from the field. Fernando came off the bench to lead Crustacean Nation in rebounds. Fernando has seen only eight minutes of play over four games with the parent club -- it's not known how long he'll be assigned to Maine.
Fernando was assigned to the G League on Thursday. Fernando averaged just 2.0 minutes per game across three appearances with the parent club to begin the season. However, he should have more opportunities to develop in the G League.
Through Boston's first three games, Fernando has yet to receive any playing time. During his first two seasons with Atlanta, Fernando appeared in 89 games and averaged 7.7 minutes per contest. But in Boston, Fernando seems to be occupying the wrong end of the bench. Fernando and veteran Jabari Parker are the only Celtics who have not yet experienced game action this season.
Fernando, along with Kris Dunn and a 2023 second-round draft pick, was traded from the Hawks to the Celtics on Friday for Tristan Thompson, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Fernando is essentially a throw-in for this trade, as the headline is Thompson for Dunn. Fernando joins a crowded center rotation in Boston. It's doubtful he sees regular action.
Fernando has been suspended one game without pay for leaving the bench during an on-court altercation in Game 6 against Philadelphia on June 18. Fernando won't be available for Game 7, but he hasn't been a part of the team's rotation during the playoffs and has only made two very limited garbage time appearances. Joel Embiid was fined $35,000 in connection with the same altercation, which also involved John Collins.
