Treadwell was working with the second-team offense Wednesday during OTAs, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Even with Stefon Diggs skipping voluntary workouts, less-proven commodities in Chad Beebe and Jordan Taylor have been working ahead of Treadwell, who's entering the final season of his rookie contract. There's still time for Treadwell to work his way back up the depth chart, but the Vikings have already seen plenty of what the 2016 first-round pick has to offer at this point, and the returns haven't been encouraging.
Minnesota officially declined the fifth-year option on Treadwell's contract Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Treadwell would have been owed nearly $10.2 million salary in 2020, but the first-round bust will have to settle for far less upon hitting unrestricted free agency next offseason. The Ole Miss product has hauled in just 56 receptions for 517 yards and one score in three seasons since entering the league. Chad Beebe (hamstring) may have an opportunity to challenge Treadwell for the No. 3 spot at receiver heading into 2019.
The Vikings are not expected to pick up the fifth-year option on Treadwell's contract, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. He has a $10.162 million option in his contract for 2020. He'll be a free agent after this season as a result. The 2016 first-round pick has been a disappointment with just 56 receptions for 517 yards and one touchdown in three seasons. He could see a reduced role this season if the Vikings utilize more two-tight end sets with the acquisition of tight end Irv Smith Jr. in the second round of the 2019 draft.
Treadwell caught one of two targets for seven yards during Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Bears. Treadwell finishes up the season with 35 catches for 302 yards and one touchdown -- all career highs. The former 2016 first-round pick hasn't come close to living up to his draft capital, but it's somewhat encouraging that Treadwell managed to slightly improve in 2018, though it shouldn't be forgotten that the 23-year-old's lack of production led to Aldrick Robinson and Chad Beebe passing him on the depth chart. With one more year left on his rookie contract, Treadwell will remain a developmental project for the Vikings in 2019.
Treadwell (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game at Detroit. Treadwell has been given every opportunity to establish a foothold behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs in the Vikings' receiving corps. Since the team's Week 10 bye, though, Treadwell managed just seven catches (on 12 targets) for 42 yards and no touchdowns across five games, spurring coach Mike Zimmer to roll with Aldrick Robinson and Chad Beebe (who is returning from a four-game absence) behind the top duo.
