The stars will be out in Maui this week when the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions tees off Thursday on the Plantation Course at Kapalua. Eight of the top 10 players in the world will be in Maui for the winners-only event on a scenic ocean-front course that usually yields low scores. Rory McIlroy is the only one of the 39 winners of the past calendar year not attending, but Xander Schauffele also gets a spot thanks to his Olympic gold-medal performance. Justin Thomas is the 8-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Oddsmakers have numerous contenders in mind from the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions field, with Jon Rahm (9-1), Collin Morikawa (11-1), Bryson DeChambeau (12-1) and Schauffele (12-1) among them.

Gates was on a roll on his picks during the fall season. At the Hero World Challenge before the break, four of his top seven golfers finished in the top five, including winner Viktor Hovland. "There's no reason to think Hovland can't contend," Gates said before the Norwegian went out and shot 18 under to win the invitation-only event by one stroke.

And at the Houston Open, seven of his picks finished in the top 20, led by Scottie Scheffler, who tied for second. The previous week at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, five of Gates' top six golfers finished in the top 15, including winner Hovland.

2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Fantasy golf picks

Gates doesn't expect much of a drop-off for Rahm this season and is strongly behind him this week in Maui. The top-ranked player in the world will be motivated to keep that distinction as Morikawa closes in, and he was the most consistent player on tour last season. He was in the top 10 in 15 of his 22 events and won his first major at the U.S. Open. He ended the year on a low note, missing the cut at the Fortinet and mostly struggling in events in Europe, but he should be recharged. He led the tour in scoring (69.3) and is a top-50 putter, which is key at Kapalua.  

At the same time, Patrick Cantlay also has taken time off, but Gates is fading him hard this week. The expert expects the FedEx Cup champion to have some rust to shake off. Cantlay has to work harder than the immensely talented Rahm to get results, and the No. 4 player in the world hasn't played since the Ryder Cup in September. Cantlay also has some strikes against him regarding Kapalua. He isn't a strong lag putter, ranking 131st last season in three-putt avoidance, and he has had some issues in windy conditions and on Bermuda grass.
