Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz was initially scheduled to return from the disabled list on Tuesday against the Rockies. Instead, his return has been delayed and he'll likely need at least one minor-league rehab start before returning from his neck injury.

“We’re moving forward, just not at as quick a pace as I’d like,” said Buchholz (bostonherald.com). “Intensity went up today without anymore soreness than yesterday or the day before. I guess if it’s time that it needs to help it heal, then we’re going to have to give it a little bit more than we were expecting to.”

While Buchholz and the Red Sox won't consider this a "setback" per se, the right-hander told reporters that he still feels a bit of pain when he attempts to throw, even off flat ground instead of the mound.

Buchholz threw a 45-pitch bullpen sesson off flat ground on Saturday in Detroit.

Buchholz, 28, is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 84 1/3 innings this season. The Red Sox are 11-1 in his starts, though he hasn't made one since June 8 due to stiffness in and around his neck.
