The Arizona Diamondbacks and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt have agreed to a contract extension, Jon Heyman confirms. The deal is for five years and $32 million, plus a club option, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Now, this "extension" isn't exactly as it sounds upon initial glance. Under baseball's salary structure, players are under team control for several years before being able to test free agency.
Goldschmidt wasn't set to become a free agent until after the 2017 season. This reported deal runs from 2014-18 with a club option for 2019. So it only buys out one year of potential free agency from Goldschmidt -- or two if the D-Backs end up picking up that '19 option.
Goldschmidt, 25, hit .286/.359/.490 with 20 homers, 82 RBI, 82 runs, 43 doubles and 18 steals last season, his first full year in the majors. He has had a huge spring, too, entering Friday hitting .414/.493/.603 with five doubles, two homers and 14 RBI in 69 plate appearances.
