On this date 110 years ago, Archibald "Moonlight" Graham played in his only big league ballgame, suiting up for the New York Giants against the Brooklyn Superbas. Graham took over as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning and did not bat in the game -- he was on deck when the final out was recorded.

Here's the box score:

Graham's baseball career -- he debuted in MLB at age 27 and played in the minors until age 30 before retiring -- would have faded into obscurity if not for the film Field of Dreams, which was based on the novel "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella. Graham was played by Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley in the film.

Here's a clip featuring Lancaster as Graham in the film:

There were some discrepancies about Graham's life and career in Field of Dreams, though he did in fact play just one the MLB game, and he did become a doctor after retiring from baseball. He reportedly collected used glasses, then invited children to his office for eye exams and fit them for glasses at no cost.

The Giants won the World Series in 1905, though Graham didn't receive a ring. No one did. They didn't give out rings to celebrate championships back then.

To date, there have been 65 non-pitchers to appear in exactly one MLB game without getting an at-bat. Graham was the sixth. Here's the list.
