Indians starting pitcher prospect Cody Anderson will be promoted from Triple-A Columbus to make his MLB debut Sunday against the Rays, the team confirmed Friday. He takes the rotation spot of Shaun Marcum, who was designated for assignment Thursday, manager Terry Francona said.
The right-hander is 4-3 with a 1.87 ERA in 12 starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season. He has 53 strikeouts and 14 walks in 67 1/3 innings.
"He worked so hard over the winter," Francona said of Anderson. "He's a big, strong kid. He didn't have a lot of flexibility. And, because of that, it was kind of hard for him to drive the ball down in the zone. He worked so hard at it at the strength and conditioning camp that, now all of a sudden, he's throwing the ball downhill. He's got a little two-seamer to go with it. So now, with all that strength and velocity, he's working down and he's having a lot of success."
