The Athletics have won the claim to Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar, who is on revocable waivers, FOXSports.com reports.
The teams have until 1 p.m. Tuesday to work out a trade, and the Rays also have the options of pulling Escobar back from waivers or letting the A's take him for no compensation aside from the salary relief associated with the shortstop's contract. Escobar is set to make $12 million over the next two seasons, and his contract has a $7-million club option for 2017 that includes a $1-million buyout.
