Seymour is a lefty with a deceptive three-quarters delivery and a knack for keeping hitters off balance by changing speeds and landing all of his pitches for strikes. His fastball has averaged 89.6 mph (touched 91.6 mph) and he has thrown his changeup as much or more than his fastball while mixing in his cutter and seldom-used curveball and sweeper. Seymour is already on the 40-man roster and could join the big-league rotation whenever there is a need.

Seymour had an impressive spring debut, striking out Jarren Duran and Alex Bregman while also retiring Triston Casas and Trevor Story. Seymour is unlikely to start the season in the Rays' rotation, but he was added to the 40-man roster this offseason. He should be a top option to make spot starts if injuries occur.

Seymour was promoted from Double-A Montgomery to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings for the Bulls.
The 25-year-old southpaw actually made two starts at Triple-A late in 2021 just to keep pitching after the High-A season wrapped up. Since then he's undergone Tommy John surgery and this is his first full season since the procedure. Seymour's fastball velocity isn't great (sits in the low-90s), but he's got a plus changeup and a quality slider. He logged a 2.36 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 91.1 innings at Double-A prior to his promotion.

Seymour has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and after making a handful of rehab appearances, he was officially activated from the injured list and assigned to Single-A Charleston. The 24-year-old worked his way to Triple-A Durham during the 2021 campaign (no runs allowed and nine strikeouts over 10 frames) and was stationed at Double-A Montgomery in 2022 before suffering a season-ending elbow injury. Given the nature of Seymour's injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the organization monitor his innings closely throughout the remainder of the minor-league season.

Rays' Ian Seymour: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Seymour (elbow) is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Montgomery and underwent Tommy John surgery this week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Seymour posted an 8.10 ERA over 16.2 innings to open the season for the Biscuits before landing on the injured list in early May. The 2020 second-round pick will miss the rest of the season and will also be sidelined for at least the first half of 2023.
