  • Matt Beaty: Bound for open market

Beaty declined his outright assignment to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday and elected free agency. After recently losing his spot on the Padres' 40-man roster, Beaty likely didn't see a path to getting a look in the big leagues over the final few weeks and will instead opt to get a head start on finding a new home for the 2023 campaign. The 29-year-old struggled to make an impact at the big-league level in 2022, slashing .093/.170/.163 over 47 plate appearances with San Diego.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Clears waivers

The Padres outrighted Beaty to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. He'll remain in the organization after producing a .333 OPS over 47 plate appearances in 20 games with San Diego before he was designated for assignment Saturday. Now that he no longer possesses a spot on the 40-man roster, Beaty may face an uphill battle to earn a promotion to San Diego before the season comes to a close.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Recalled by San Diego

Beaty was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Beaty returned from the 60-day injured list in mid-August but was immediately optioned to El Paso, and he'll now rejoin the big-league club with rosters expanding to 28 players. The 29-year-old has a .364 OPS in 40 plate appearances this season and should fill a depth role while up in the majors.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Reinstated, optioned to Triple-A

Beaty (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day IL on Tuesday and was subsequently optioned to Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Beaty restarted his rehab assignment July 27 and is slashing .309/.433/.418 with a home run and seven RBI in 15 games since. He's back to full health, but the Padres don't appear to have room for him on the big-league roster at the moment. Beaty has struggled during his time in the majors this season, batting .108 with no homers and only one RBI over 37 at-bats.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Restarts rehab assignment

Beaty (shoulder) resumed his rehab assignment at Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday and has gone 2-for-11 with a walk and two runs while playing in games four of the past five days. Beaty, who has been on the Padres' injured list since early May with a left shoulder impingement, is in the midst of his third separate rehab assignment following a recent two-and-a-half-week hiatus. Whenever he's finally activated from the 60-day IL, Beaty will likely handle a limited role off San Diego's bench.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Moves to 60-day IL

Beaty (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. Beaty has been on the injured list since early May, but he reported to Triple-A El Paso on May 24 to begin a rehab assignment. However, his rehab assignment was paused in early June, and he'll now be ineligible to return until at least early July. A better idea of his return timetable should be revealed once he resumes a rehab assignment.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Rehab put on hold

Beaty's shoulder injury hasn't progressed as hoped, and his rehab assignment has been halted, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Beaty was placed on the 10-day IL on May 9 with a left shoulder impingement, but he appeared to be progressing to the extent that he was able to begin a rehab assignment May 24. He hit well over four games with Triple-A El Paso, going 7-for-17 with a home run and five RBI. However, the shoulder continues to give him problems, so the organization has decided to send him back to its training complex in Arizona. It's unclear when Beaty may be able to return to game action.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Begins rehab assignment

Beaty (shoulder) reported to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Beaty has been sidelined by a shoulder impingement since May 8, but he's now in the final stages of his rehab program. The 29-year-old could rejoin the Padres' active roster by this weekend if all goes well during the rehab stint with El Paso.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Placed on 10-day IL

Beaty was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement Monday, retroactive to May 8. Beaty sustained a left shoulder injury on a diving attempt in the outfield Saturday and was held out of Sunday's lineup. After being diagnosed with a left shoulder impingement, he'll be forced to miss at least a week-plus. Trayce Thompson and Jose Azocar should see increased playing time in the outfield while Beaty and Wil Myers (thumb) are out.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Not in Sunday's lineup

Beaty (shoulder) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Beaty appeared to suffer a shoulder injury on a diving attempt in the outfield during Saturday's game, and he won't start Sunday's series finale. The 29-year-old has seen significant action in right field since Wil Myers (thumb) landed on the injured list, and the Padres will continue moving down the depth chart. Trayce Thompson will receive the nod in right for Sunday's contest.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Exits with shoulder injury

Beaty left Saturday's loss to the Marlins after appearing to injure his shoulder while diving for a ball in the second inning, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Beaty got the start in right field but had to give way to Jose Azocar after landing awkwardly on the attempted catch in the second frame. Manager Bob Melvin didn't sound optimistic about Beaty's prognosis after the game, stating, "They're working on him right now, but it was obviously enough to where he had to come out of the game, so that's not a great sign." San Diego is already without primary right fielder Wil Myers, who is on the 10-day injured list with a thumb injury, so losing Beaty for any amount of time would further thin the team's outfield depth. Options in right field behind Myers and Beaty include Azocar, Trayce Thompson and CJ Abrams.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Not in Thursday's lineup

Beaty isn't starting Thursday's game against the Marlins. Beaty has gone 1-for-18 with three runs, two walks and a strikeout over his last six games, and he'll take a seat with left-hander Jesus Luzardo on the mound for the Marlins. Trayce Thompson will start in right field and bat ninth.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: On bench for Game 2

Beaty is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Guardians. Beaty will see his streak of six consecutive starts come to an end while he sits in favor of Jose Azocar in the nightcap. He served as San Diego's designated hitter in the team's 5-4 win in Game 1 of the day, going 1-for-4 with a run.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Picks up fifth straight start

Beaty will start in right field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Pirates. With Wil Myers (thumb) on the injured list, Beaty has taken over as the Padres' primary option in right field. He'll make his fifth consecutive start Sunday, despite going 0-for-11 with two walks and two runs in his previous four games.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Filling in for Myers

Beaty will start in right field and bat sixth in Thursday's game against the Reds. After going hitless in four plate appearances during Wednesday's 8-5 win, Beaty will pick up a second straight start in right field in place of the injured Wil Myers. If Myers' right thumb and index finger injuries end up forcing him to the injured list, the lefty-hitting Beaty would likely occupy the larger side of a platoon in right field.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Second straight start

Beaty will start in right field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against Atlanta. He'll stick in the starting nine for the second game in a row while top right fielder Wil Myers (thumb) remains on the bench for the third consecutive contest. If Myers' thumb issue results in him landing on the injured list, Beaty could end up settling into a strong-side platoon role in right field with either Jurickson Profar or Jose Azocar.

  • Padres' Matt Beaty: Sent to San Diego

Beaty was traded from the Dodgers to the Padres on Monday in exchange for River Ryan. Trades between division rivals are rare, but the Dodgers likely don't see Beaty as particularly useful given that they designated him for assignment last week. The Padres have a hole in left field, however, so it's not hard to see Beaty playing a significant role this season, potentially in a platoon with Jurickson Profar. Beaty is coming off a season in which he hit .270/.363/.402 with seven homers in 234 trips to the plate, so he should be able to have at least deep-league relevance if he carves out regular playing time.

  • Dodgers' Matt Beaty: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Dodgers designated Beaty for assignment Wednesday. The transaction clears room on the 40-man roster for the newly-signed Hanser Alberto, who effectively replaces Beaty as a utility option off the bench. Though consistent playing time was often difficult to come by for Beaty on a stacked Dodgers roster over the past three seasons, he should face an easier path to earning reps at his next stop, as he's a prime candidate to be traded or claimed off waivers now that he's in DFA limbo. The lefty-hitting Beaty has been particularly effective against opposite-handed pitching; over 493 career plate appearances versus righties, Beaty has slashed .267/.339/.440 (109 wRC+).

  • Dodgers' Matt Beaty: On bench Game 2

Beaty is not in the lineup for Game 2 of the NCLS against Atlanta on Sunday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. Beaty started the NL Wild Card Game and Game 1 of the NLDS at first base with Max Muncy (elbow) sidelined, but he's now coming off the bench for the sixth straight contest. Cody Bellinger will receive the start at first base, while Gavin Lux mans center field.

  • Dodgers' Matt Beaty: Not starting Game 1

Beaty isn't starting Game 1 of the NLCS against Atlanta on Saturday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. Beaty is one of the favorites for playing time at first base during the NLCS since Max Muncy (elbow) was left off the roster for the best-of-seven series. However, Albert Pujols will start at first base and bat sixth in Game 1.
