Player Outlook
Jacob Hurtubise, an undrafted free agent out of the United States Military Academy (West Point), was added to the 40-man roster during the offseason after slashing .330/.479/.483 in stops at Double-A Chattanooga (159 +wRC) and Triple-A Louisville (172). He doesn't carry a prospect's pedigree, and an inflated BABIP should come back to earth, but the Army grad showed superlative plate discipline (16.9 BB%, 13.8 K%) and on-base ability to capitalize on his speed (45 steals). There's a crowd in the Reds' outfield, where the team would like to have a right-handed bat, so it's likely the lefty-batting Hurtubise opens at Louisville with a chance to reach the majors in 2024.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Doubles, scores insurance run

Hurtubise went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers. Hurtubise led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his first extra-base hit as a major leaguer and scored on a single one batter later. The rookie, who was recently moved to the leadoff spot against right-handers, has hit safely in three straight and scored runs in three of the last four contests.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Leading off again

Hurtubise batted leadoff and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to San Diego. After the Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Hurtubise made things happen for the Reds in the bottom of the frame. He was hit by a pitch then stole second base before scoring on a Jeimer Candelario triple. This was Hurtubise's third consecutive start as the leadoff batter -- all against right-handers -- and he's been removed for a pinch hitter in all three. He's 3-for-14 with three walks, one stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored over nine games since his callup. Once TJ Friedl (thumb) is back, Hurtubise's run as the leadoff batter, and maybe his time on the big-league roster, will end.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Bats leadoff Tuesday

Hurtubise batted leadoff and went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Padres. Since TJ Friedl (thumb) landed on the 10-day injured list, Will Benson had handled leadoff duties against right-handers, but manager David Bell moved the rookie to the top of the order Tuesday. It's unclear if this will remain the manager's practice going forward. Hurtubise has two hits and two walks over 13 plate appearances since being called up from Triple-A Louisville.

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Logs first MLB hit

Hurtubise started in left field and went 1-for-3 in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers. Hurtubise, who made his third start since being recalled last Monday, collected his first MLB hit. He's around for depth while the Reds cope with several injuries that have tested the team's depth. Outfielder TJ Friedl (thumb) landed on the IL last week, and Spencer Steer, who has been the primary left fielder, is part of the rotation at first base to help cover for the absence of Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist).

  • Reds' Jacob Hurtubise: Starts in left field

Hurtubise started in left field and went 0-for-2 in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Hurtubise, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Monday, made his first MLB start, giving Spencer Steer a break. The 26-year-old Hurtubise was eventually pinch hit for against a left-handed reliever. He's just the second graduate of West Point to reach the major leagues.
