Brant Hurter made his MLB debut in 2024 and was a bit of a pleasant surprise for the Tigers. The 26-year-old posted a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP with 38 strikeouts across 45.1 innings. What made the performance surprising was the fact that Hurter posted a 5.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 71.1 innings for Triple-A Toledo earlier in the year, which also marked his first stop at that level. The unheralded rookie mostly pitched in relief for Detroit, though it was largely in a bulk role, and he also did make one start. Hurter benefited from a .236 BABIP, so some regression could be in store over a longer time period, but his 3.03 FIP suggests that he wasn't overly lucky. Following his successful debut, Hurter could transition into a more typical rotation spot in 2025, depending on how the Tigers approach their pitching staff. Either way, the young southpaw has put himself on the fantasy radar, and he makes for an intriguing upside play.

    With Andrew Chafin joining the Tigers on a minor-league deal last month, Hurter's roster spot could be in jeopardy coming out of camp, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The lefty Hurter pitched well last year during his MLB debut, compiling a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 regular-season innings. However, the 34-year-old Chafin has a lot more MLB experience, which could lead the Tigers to choose him as a southpaw for their bullpen to complement the likes of Tyler Holton and Sean Guenther. Hurter still probably has a leg up in the competition, though he'd likely feel more secure if he strung together some strong outings to wrap up the spring slate.

    While he will compete for a regular rotation spot during spring training, Hurter and Kenta Maeda may end up splitting bulk-relief duties, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. With the Tigers recently adding Jack Flaherty to the mix, they now have a surplus of starting options. Flaherty, Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson all figure to be locked into the rotation. Behind them, Detroit has the likes of Hurter, Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe, Casey Mize and Keider Montero. With the exception of Jobe, who made his MLB debut toward the end of last year and appeared in just two regular-season contests, all of the other pitchers started games in 2024. The veteran Cobb should snag a rotation spot in the early going, which leaves plenty of players vying for one role. Jobe has the most upside of the bunch and could run away with the job if he impresses, though manager A.J. Hinch may mix and match and use some pitchers in bulk relief. The lefty Hurter and righty Maeda could be a natural pairing in that scenario, with the two potentially working together in some contests.
