Hernandez is slashing .288/.398/.621 with five home runs in 20 games for Double-A Montgomery. Hernandez has an elite 38.1 percent hard-hit rate to go with an improved 24.1 percent strikeout rate -- he struck out 28 percent of the time in 118 games at Double-A last year. Since Hernandez is limited to left field and designated hitter, he needs to be very productive at the plate. It's a strong start to his age-24 campaign, but given Hernandez's age and the fact he is repeating the level, it would be nice to see how he stacks up against Triple-A pitching later this season.... Rays' Heriberto Hernandez: Dealt to Rays
Hernandez was traded from the Rangers to the Rays on Thursday in exchange for Nate Lowe, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Hernandez was added to the Rangers' 60-man roster pool for the final few weeks of the 2020 season, but he still hasn't played above rookie ball. He'll now continue his development with the Rays. Although Hernandez is several years away from major-league consideration, he's displayed intriguing power in the lower levels of the minors, posting a 1.088 OPS with 11 home runs and 49 RBI in 2019.... Rangers' Heriberto Hernandez: Joins roster pool
The Rangers added Hernandez to their 60-man roster pool Sept. 9, Jamey Newberg of The Dallas Morning News reports. Hernandez becomes the sixth catcher added to Texas' roster pool, joining Jose Trevino (wrist), Jeff Mathis, Sam Huff, Tim Federowicz and Nick Ciuffo, although most evaluators expect Hernandez to end up as a corner outfielder or designated hitter long term. Trevino, Mathis and Huff are already a part of the 40-man roster, and given their prior big-league experience, Federowicz and Ciuffo are much more likely than Hernandez to receive a promotion if the Rangers are in need of another backstop over the final two weeks of the season. The 20-year-old Hernandez hasn't played above the rookie-ball level, but he boasts intriguing power that could make him a fantasy asset a few years down the road.... See More ... See Less
