Dermody elected free agency Monday.

Chicago outrighted Dermody off the 40-man roster earlier in September, and since he wasn't a candidate to pitch for the Cubs in the postseason, he'll part ways with the organization entirely. Dermody made one appearance for the Cubs this season, tossing a scoreless frame in relief.

Dermody was outrighted to the Cubs' alternate training site Thursday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

He passed through waivers and will remain in the organization after getting designated for assignment earlier this week.

The Cubs designated Dermody for assignment Monday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Chicago selected Dermody's contract ahead of Sunday's game, and he ended up making his first big-league appearance since 2017 in the 7-3 loss, tossing a scoreless inning in relief. The Cubs apparently didn't view Dermody as part of their long-term plans, so he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster a day later with Chicago scooping speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton up off waivers from the Mets.

Dermody signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Dermody spent last season in the Toronto organization at Triple-A Buffalo, where he posted a 5.48 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 23 innings across 15 appearances. The southpaw will serve as organizational pitching depth for the Cubs during the 2020 campaign and should report to the team's alternate training site.

Dermody will stick with in Blue Jays' organization after passing through waivers untouched. The 27-year-old, who split time between Triple-A and the big club last season, will serve as organizational bullpen depth in 2018.

The Blue Jays needed to open up a spot on their 40-man roster following the acquisition of Sam Gaviglio, and Dermody was the odd man out. The 27-year-old has struggled so far in camp, allowing six runs on 11 hits across six frames. He'll take a spin through waivers to determine his landing spot for 2018, though he doesn't figure to serve as anything more than a mop-up man or lefty specialist wherever he lands.

Dermody was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

The left-hander will return to the big club to provide an extra arm out of the bullpen after Dominic Leone (personal) was placed on the bereavement list. Dermody has previously made five appearances with the Blue Jays on the season, yielding eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and two walks over four innings. He'll likely be used as a mop-up man or situationally against left-handed hitters.

Dermody will be sent back to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for the Jays' Wednesday starter, Nick Tepesch, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.

Dermody is the guy who will continue to bounce between levels depending on what the club needs for any given week. For now, the Jays will be evaluating some new rotation possibilities, so Dermody heads back after a two-week stay in Toronto. He's only pitched in five MLB games this year, but the 26-year-old has posted impressive marks (3.29 ERA and 37:9 K:BB) through 32 games and 41 innings with the Bisons.

Dermody has been a solid relief arm for the Bisons this season, amassing a 3.29 ERA and a 37:9 K:BB in 41 innings of work. With Danny Barnes (shoulder) landing on the disabled list Tuesday, Dermody will replace him on the active roster to fill the void in the bullpen, although it's unlikely that the latter will fill as integral of a role moving forward given his one disastrous performance earlier in the season.

Dermody has allowed just one run over 10 appearances and 11.1 innings since returning to Triple-A Buffalo.

Dermody's one MLB appearance this season didn't go well -- he allowed five runs on four hits, including three homers while recording just one out April 16 against Baltimore. Despite proving to be an effective minor-league reliever since 2013, the righty has failed to make a positive impression in his limited major-league service over the past two years. Dermody will likely get another crack with the Jays once a hole opens in the team's bullpen.

Dermody was optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports.

This is the corresponding move for when Aaron Sanchez (finger) gets activated from the DL prior to Sunday's start. Dermody will continue to serve as organizational bullpen depth at the Triple-A level.

However, his good fortune came to a screeching halt Sunday when the Pirates rocked Dermody for three runs on three hits and a free pass in just one inning. Less than 24 hours later, Dermody learned he'd be opening 2017 with the Bisons. The left-hander will likely return to the big-league team when the need for a southpaw reliever arrives later in the year.

Dermody has allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out two over four appearances (three innings) this spring.

The signing of lefty J.P. Howell last month means the Jays have room for just one more southpaw in the team's bullpen. Dermody's top competition is Aaron Loup, whose performance has gotten progressively worse over the past few seasons in Toronto. The 26-year-old Dermody posted an impressive 1.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 47 minor-league games last season.

Dermody, who enjoyed a breakthrough year in the minors last season, credits his recent success to a change in arm slot that he'll continue to work on this spring as he competes for a spot in the Blue Jays' bullpen, Alexis Brudnicki of Baseball America reports.

After signing with the Jays in 2013 as a 22-year-old, Dermody couldn't advance past Low-A Dunedin during his first three seasons. Last year, the southpaw sprinted through four levels and finished on the big league roster, to which he credits the ability to locate his pitches down in the zone after changing to a high three-quarter arm slot. This spring, Dermody will compete for a specialist role in the team's bullpen. Depending on how things shake out, he may find opportunities to tally holds during the 2017 campaign.

Dermody appears unlikely to pitch in a meaningful situation again this season.

The rookie left-hander was called up as part of roster expansions at the beginning of the month, but Dermody failed to earn the manager's confidence with his lackluster performance over his first five appearances. Dermody failed to get an out in either of his last two outings, Sept. 13 and 14. Toronto has a few experienced southpaws to lean on down the stretch, so it's unlikely Dermody will be granted any fantasy-worthy opportunities.
