Giants' Sammy Long: Earns starting nod
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long will start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

The lefty will make his first big-league start after pitching two long-relief outings. Manager Gabe Kapler said Long, who figures to fill the fifth spot in San Francisco's rotation, "has really earned the opportunity."

Giants' Sammy Long: Works five innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long allowed four runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings in Tuesday's win over Arizona. He did not factor in the decision.

Long worked behind opener Zack Littell on Tuesday, but it was Long who recorded the first out for San Francisco's pitching staff. The 25-year-old wasn't very effective while on the mound, but he was not in line for a decision. Long threw 65 pitches (46 strikes) in the outing. He could continue to work behind an opener going forward, and he lines up to pitch again in some capacity this weekend versus Philadelphia.

Giants' Sammy Long: Working behind opener again
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell in Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

In his major-league debut June 9 in Texas, Long excelled while working behind Littell. After Littell exited following a scoreless first inning, Long permitted only one run on one hit and one walk while striking out seven over four frames. Since Long didn't cover more than four innings in any of his six minor-league outings prior to his call-up last week, the Giants likely won't ask him to work much longer Tuesday than he did in his MLB debut. Even so, Long will still be the Giants pitcher most likely to factor into any decision against Arizona.

Giants' Sammy Long: Shines in debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long allowed one run on a hit and a walk in four innings while striking out seven in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.

Entering as a bulk reliever after Zack Littell opened with a scoreless first, Long pitched extremely well and would've qualified for a win if not for Tyler Rogers' blown save in the ninth. The 25-year-old is expected to join the starting rotation and looks built up for such a role after throwing 69 pitches Wednesday. Long is projected to make his first career start Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Giants' Sam Long: Contract officially selected
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long's contract was selected by the Giants on Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Long will make his major-league debut Wednesday against the Rangers, but he's expected to serve as the primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell. However, the southpaw is expected to take the rotation spot that had been occupied by Logan Webb (shoulder). Long made six appearances (three starts) in the minors to begin the year, and he posted a 1.99 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 22.2 innings.

Giants' Sam Long: Working behind opener Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell in Wednesday's game in Texas, Maria I. Guardado of reports.

Though he won't technically start in his MLB debut, Long is expected to slide into the rotation spot previously occupied by Logan Webb (shoulder), who moved to the injured list last week. After joining the Giants on a minor-league deal in free agency this offseason, the 25-year-old Long has quickly established himself as an intriguing prospect thus far during the minor-league season. Through six outings between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento, Long has posted a 1.99 ERA and 37:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .165 average.

Giants' Sam Long: Could follow opener Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Long won't start Wednesday against the Rangers but could work as a bulk reliever, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Manager Gabe Kapler already confirmed the 25-year-old will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento for Wednesday's contest, though it will be reliever Zack Littell who receives the start. Assuming Long pitches, following an opener could be beneficial, as he could be in line for a win without needing to last five innings.

Giants' Sam Long: Role undetermined for Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Manager Gabe Kapler confirmed Tuesday that Long will be recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, but he did not name him as the starter for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Previous reports indicated that Long would draw the start in place of Logan Webb (shoulder) on Wednesday and that very well could still be the case. However, based on Kapler's comments, it appears that the club could at least be considering utilizing an an opener, who would likely be followed by Long serving as the bulk man. The Giants will likely clarify their pitching plans following the conclusion of Tuesday's contest.

Giants' Sam Long: Big-league debut coming Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants will call up Long from Triple-A Sacramento to start Wednesday's game in Texas, Robert Murray of reports.

Long will fill the vacancy in the rotation created by Logan Webb's (shoulder) move to the injured list last week. Prior to Wednesday's game, the Giants will need to open up a spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for Long, who has emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the organization's top arms in the upper levels of the minors this season. He didn't pitch above Low-A prior to 2021, but the 25-year-old southpaw has dominated between stops at Sacramento and Double-A Richmond this season, compiling a 1.99 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 37:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .165 average. Long may be in line for just one start with the big club, as Aaron Sanchez (biceps) began a rehab assignment at Sacramento on Monday and could be an option to fill Webb's turn in the rotation when it comes up again early next week.
