Padres' Trey Wingenter: Out with shoulder injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter is dealing with a shoulder injury and recently had a cortisone injection, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Sanders says that Wingenter isn't particularly close to pitching in games, so it sounds inevitable that he will open the year on the injured list. He is a hard thrower who has the stuff to pitch in the late innings, but he'd still have been fifth or sixth at best in the pecking order in this loaded bullpen.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Back in big leagues
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was recalled from Double-A Amarillo on Sunday.

Wingenter has thrown 46.1 innings for the Padres this season, struggling ti a 5.05 ERA. His strong 33.2 percent strikeout rate hasn't been enough to overcome a poor 13.3 percent walk rate or a low 34.3 percent groundball rate.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Sent back to minors
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was optioned to Double-A Amarillo on Thursday.

This move, which comes after Wingenter allowed three runs across 1.1 innings as the opener Wednesday, frees up a spot on the roster for Nick Martini, who was claimed off waivers from the Athletics. The righty reliever should rejoin the big club sometime in September.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Gives up three runs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter gave up three runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two through 1.1 innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Serving as the opener in a bullpen game, Wingenter retired the first three batters he faced before allowing three baserunners in the second inning before his quick exit. The right-hander was technically making his first professional start at any level, even though this was obviously intended to be a limited outing. The right-hander has an 8.64 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP in his last nine appearances.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Working as opener in bullpen game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter will serve as the Padres' opening pitcher for Wednesday's series finale versus the Dodgers, AJ Cassavell of reports.

While the right-hander will be making the first start of his career at either the major- or minor-league level, he's not expected to work more than an inning or two before giving way to the bullpen. The Padres haven't named a primary pitcher behind Wingenter, so it's likely that manager Andy Green will take a "Johnny Wholestaff" approach to the series finale and mix and match with several different relievers. Wingenter owns a 4.60 ERA and 63:24 K:BB over 45 innings this season.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Optioned to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Wingenter was optioned in a series of moves made by the Padres to make room for Adrian Morejon and Michel Baez. Wingenter had pitched fairly effectively out of the bullpen for the club, posting a 4.26 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 53 strikeouts across 38 innings.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: To be optioned to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter is expected to be optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The club needs to make room for Michel Baez, who is set to be called up Sunday. Wingenter has appeared exclusively out of the bullpen for the Padres this season and has compiled a 4.26 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 53 strikeouts across 38 innings.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Earns 12th hold
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter tossed a scoreless sixth inning, allowing two hits and striking out one to earn a hold in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Braves.

The reliever was able to keep his line clean before the game turned into a back-and-forth affair. Wingenter is up to 12 holds this year with a 3.34 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across 35 innings. The 25-year-old also has a 47:17 K:BB and a 1-1 record in his 35 appearances.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Returns from injured list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter (shoulder) was activated off the 10-day injured list Sunday.

Wingenter had been on the IL for about two weeks with right shoulder inflammation and is able to make his return without a rehab assignment. The 25-year-old has a 2.93 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB through 15.1 innings and should return to a high-leverage role for the Friars.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Could return over weekend
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter (shoulder) completed a bullpen session Thursday, AJ Cassavell of reports.

The side session was Wingenter's second in three days, suggesting he's progressing well in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation. The Padres will reassess Wingenter's condition Friday and could activate him from the 10-day injured list at some point during the weekend.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Completes bullpen session
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Wingenter was eligible to be activated off the 10-day injured list Tuesday but will instead require a few extra days before returning to the majors. The Padres may have the 25-year-old throw another bullpen session before activating him, but it doesn't sound as though a minor-league rehab assignment will be necessary.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Out with shoulder strain
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain Sunday.

The move was made retroactive to Saturday, so Wingenter is eligible to return May 14. The Padres have yet to specify a target return date for the righty. Phil Maton was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Gets seventh hold
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was credited with a hold in the Padres' 4-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday, throwing a scoreless inning while recording one strikeout and no walks.

The right-hander continues to excel in the early going out of the Padres' bullpen, as this latest scoreless effort gives him a 2.51 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 18 strikeouts over 14.1 innings. With Kirby Yates dominating as San Diego's closer, Wingenter doesn't figure to see many save opportunities, but he at least looks primed to continue to provide solid ratios and high strikeout totals.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Gets first save
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter got the save against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, working around two walks to record a scoreless ninth inning and close out San Diego's 7-6 victory. He struck out two.

Kirby Yates has already made eight appearances, so Wingenter got the nod as the closer in this contest and successfully protected a one-run lead despite issuing two free passes. Yates remains the unquestioned go-to option for the role, so Wingenter shouldn't be expected to see these chances frequently aside from days when Yates needs a rest. However, Wingenter already has three holds on the year, so perhaps he's improving his standing in the pecking order as an alternative should Yates miss time.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Getting early work
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter struck out one without allowing a baserunner over a scoreless inning in the Padres' 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Wingenter has been getting his fair share of work in the early going with four appearances in seven games, and he's done well with the opportunities thus far, allowing one earned run and striking out four batters over that time, although he has allowed four hits and a walk to leave his WHIP at 1.50. The right-hander had a 3.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and five holds to go along with a 27:11 K:BB over 19 innings of work as a rookie last season. He'll look to continue to build trust and establish himself as a fixture in the Padres' bullpen.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Returns to action over weekend
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter (back) allowed one run on two hits in one inning Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

Wingenter was unavailable for a few days after getting hit with a liner last week, but he was cleared to return over the weekend. The 24-year-old reliever now owns a 2.84 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB across 6.1 innings with the Padres this season.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Plays catch Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter (back) was able to play catch Friday after getting hit by a line drive during Thursday's game, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

There has yet to be word as to whether Wingenter will be available out of the bullpen, but it's likely that manager Andy Green would've tried to refrain from using him anyways after the right-hander recorded four outs Thursday. Consider him day-to-day moving forward.

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Exits after getting hit with liner
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Wingenter was removed from Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks after being struck in the back by a liner in the top of the sixth inning, the Associated Press reports.

With Padres starting pitcher Jacob Nix failing to escape the first inning after surrendering five runs, the team needed five relievers to finish out the game. One of those summoned from the bullpen was Wingenter, who struck out the side in the fifth before coming back out for another inning. He retired the first batter of the frame before A.J. Pollock sent one back up the middle off the pitcher's back. The right-hander is considered day-to-day and will presumably be re-evaluated prior to Friday's game.
