Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Detained by authorities in D.R.
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz was detained by transit authorities in the Dominican Republic on Monday after a vehicle he was driving struck a motorcycle in an accident in which three people lost their lives, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports.

He was part of the Pirates' 60-man player pool but apparently had returned to his native country. Cruz was reportedly traveling outside the hours allowed by the Dominican Republic, established as a measure to counter the spread of COVID-19, so he could be punished for that violation. There will also be an investigation into his role in the accident.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Selected to playing pool
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz was named to the Pirates' 60-man player pool Sunday.

Cruz hit .217 with one homer and four RBI in 23 at-bats during February and March, and an 11:1 K:BB shows he likely needs more time in the minors. The 6-foot-7 infielder slashed .298/.356/.475 with eight homers and 11 steals in 265 at-bats split between three minor-league levels in 2019. He remains one of the organization's brightest offensive prospects, but it will take a number of injuries for him to garner playing time in Pittsburgh before 2021.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Heading to Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz was optioned to Double-A Altoona on Monday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Cruz played 35 games for Altoona last season, homering once and stealing three bases while hitting .269/.346/.412. Despite his unusual size for a shortstop (6-foot-7), the Pirates reportedly have no imminent plans for him to change positions.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: First major-league camp continues
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz, who went 1-for-3 with a run scored Wednesday, is batting .235 in 17 Grapefruit-League at-bats.

The 6-foot-7 shortstop hasn't looked out of place defensively thus far, even if he's expected to eventually move to another position. Cruz showed off a glimpse of his power potential with a tape-measure homer Sunday, stroking a prodigious shot over the center field wall. He's expected to start the season at Double-A and has done nothing to diminish his prospect tag in spring training, though a 0:7 BB:K throws up a hint of caution in his timeline.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Not lacking in confidence
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz, who saw his first action at the Double-A level in 2019, has received his first invitation to major-league spring training, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

"My goal is to make it to the big leagues this year," Cruz said. "I want to do everything possible to make it to the big leagues this year. For me, there's nothing impossible." The 21-year-old prospect is an oddity because of his size -- he stands 6-foot-7 -- and the position he currently plays, shortstop. While some projections have Cruz delivering monster power, he's hit just 32 home runs over his last three seasons. Since there are few size comparisons for Cruz, predicting his path may prove difficult. After returning from an early-season foot fracture in 2019, he hit well in High-A (.301/.345/.515) before jumping to Double-A (.269/.346/.412) for the final month. He then struggled in the Arizona Fall League, batting .190 with a 7:21 BB:K mark in 42 at-bats. Cruz is one of Pittsburgh's brightest prospects and it will be interesting to see how the team's new management handles his progression.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Protected from Rule 5 draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz was added to the Pirates' 40-man roster Wednesday.

Cruz is one of the Pirates' top prospects, so it's no surprise to see the team protect him from the Rule 5 draft. The 21-year-old split 2019 between High-A and Double-A, posting a .298/.356/.475 slash line.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Shows skills Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz went 1-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases against Double-A Hartford on Monday.

The steals were his first since he was promoted from High-A Bradenton. Cruz is batting .333 in his last 10 games. He's already ripped off three triples in 21 Eastern League contests and continues to show why he ranks near the top of Pittsburgh's prospects list. The 6-foot-6 infielder has played shortstop exclusively in 2019 but it wouldn't be surprising to see him end up at another position in the majors. Cruz is slashing .307/.357/.493 with seven homers and 10 steals across three levels in 2019.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Struggling early after promotion
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz, who was promoted to Double-A Altoona on July 30, has gone 5-for-26 (.192 average) with a 2:8 BB:K in his first eight games with the affiliate.

Despite striking out in 26.2 percent of his plate appearances with High-A Bradenton earlier this season, Cruz was still a well-above-average producer during his time in the Florida State League, turning in a .301/.345/.515 slash line (153 wRC+). He may need to reduce the swing and miss in his game to replicate that level of success in Double-A, where he'll be matching up against more advanced arms. Given that Cruz is far younger than most of his contemporaries in the Eastern League at just 20 years old, it wouldn't be surprising if he fails to turn in standout numbers in his first taste of Double-A.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Back in action Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz (foot) went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs against Fort Myers on Sunday.

The High-A affair was his first since he fractured his foot in late April. Cruz, who went 6-for-10 with a stolen base in a rehab stint, returned to his customary shortstop position and batted third in the Marauders' lineup. The 20-year-old offers an interesting combination of speed and power. He is expected to spend most, if not all, of the summer playing for Bradenton.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Set to accelerate rehab
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz (foot) appears on track to accelerate his rehab program and build up toward a return to game action in 7-to-10 days, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Cruz has been idle since late April after fracturing his rght foot while playing for High-A Bradenton. Due to the length of his absence, Cruz will likely need to prove his health by appearing in multiple nine-inning simulated games and extended spring training games before the organization clears him to return from the 7-day injured list. Cruz was hitting .238 with a home run and four steals in 11 games with Bradenton prior to being shut down.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Making progress in rehab
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz (foot) was recently cleared to resume full weight-bearing activities, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Cruz seems to have progressed as anticipated since being shut down in late April with a fractured left foot, but he's still probably multiple weeks away from returning to game action at High-A Bradenton. Prior to being shut down with the injury, the 20-year-old outfielder was hitting .238/.304/.333 with a 4-for-4 success rate on stolen-base attempts and a 28.3 percent strikeout rate.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Suffers serious injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz suffered a fractured foot while sliding into second base Friday, general manager Neal Huntington said during his Sunday radio show.

Huntington said Cruz will be out for a "decent amount of time" and provided no timetable for a return. The 6-foot-6 infielder had already missed time in April with a lower-body injury. Cruz was off to a slow start, batting just .238 with one homer and four stolen bases in 11 games. The 20-year-old moved up prospect rankings in 2018 with a slash line of .286/.343/.488, including 14 home runs and 11 stolen bases for Low-A West Virginia.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Provides fireworks against Phillies
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz went 1-for-3 with a tape-measure homer off Zach Eflin in Saturday's win over Philadelphia.

The 20-year-old, who also turned a pair of nifty double plays Saturday, slashed .286/.343/.488 with 14 homers and 11 stolen bases for Low-A Bradenton in 2018. He's one of Pittsburgh's top prospects but likely remains a long ways away from making his potential major-league debut. General manager Neal Huntington said during Saturday's game that the organization plans on keeping the 6-foot-6 Dominican at shortstop despite his height, at least for the time being. Given Cruz's blend of speed and power, there's a good chance he moves up fantasy rankings quickly. He's expected to play for High-A Bradenton in 2019.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Dealing with groin strain
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz hasn't played for Low-A West Virginia since Aug. 13 due to a mild groin strain, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

West Virginia's season is set to end Monday, and it appears unlikely that Cruz will be activated from the 7-day disabled list before then. Since the injury isn't considered a major setback, Cruz should enjoy a rather normal offseason in preparation for an assignment to the Florida State League next spring. The 19-year-old shortstop was impressive in his first complete year of full-season ball, finishing with a .286/.343/.488 slash line, 14 home runs and 11 steals.

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Named Sally League Player of Month for June
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cruz, 19, was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Month for June.

After coming over from the Dodgers in a trade deadline deal last season, Cruz has emerged as a top prospect in the Pirates' system. He improved his contact rate significantly this year, as he's currently hitting the ball 14 percent more than last season with Low-A West Virginia. Interestingly, this increased contact rate hasn't sapped his power either, as he has 11 home runs and 17 doubles. This has helped him produce a .296/.355/.497 slash line through 81 games with the Power this season. Cruz's defense is still pretty rough however, as he tallied a whopping 27 errors at shortstop already. Given this, scouts tend to think he'll either end up at third base or a corner outfield spot. Either way, his bat will play at any of those positions, and his arm is strong enough to succeed around the diamond. It's tough to see him making a big leap in the organization this season, but if he can continue mashing at the plate, he could get up to Double-A or Triple-A by the end of the 2019 season.
