Astros' Tyler Ivey: Done for season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey will miss the rest of the season due to a nerve issue in his elbow, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

He had apparently been pitching hurt for quite some time and finally spoke up about it since nothing was working for him. While he suffered a Grade 1 UCL strain in 2019, there is reportedly no damage to his UCL this time around. However, Ivey may require Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery, which is a very significant procedure for a pitcher. The best-case scenario is that he is healthy for spring training next year, but he could be sidelined longer than that.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Sent down after spot start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three in 4.2 innings Friday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision and was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land after the game, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It was a spot start for the 25-year-old righty, and the Astros won't need a fifth starter again until June 1 against Boston, at which point Jake Odorizzi (forearm) and/or Jose Urquidy (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list. Ivey had given up five runs and five walks in 6.1 innings at Triple-A prior to getting the call, so he has some refinement left to do on the farm.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Promoted to big leagues
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey was called up Wednesday by the Astros and will start Friday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Ivey has allowed five earned runs in 6.1 innings across two minor-league games this season. Widely considered one of the Astros' top prospects, the righty will be making his big-league debut Friday.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Optioned to Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The 24-year-old righty did not allow a run and struck out six over four innings this spring. He also walked three while surrendering just one hit. Ivey could provide rotation or bullpen depth later this season.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Shielded from Rule 5 draft
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey was added to the Astros' 40-man roster Friday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.

Ivey has been unable to build up his workload much over the past two seasons, so that will be a priority in 2021 as he looks to prove that he can be a starter long term. He has a mid-90s fastball and two breaking balls with plus potential, so he could be a quality reliever if things don't work out in the rotation.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Limited spring use
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey made one Grapefruit League appearance and struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Ivey, a 2017 third-round draft pick, is the Astros' fourth-ranked prospect per RotoWire, but he is coming off an abbreviated 2019 season. He was first suspended for using a foreign substance, then had a mid-summer scare when what had been described as a mild UCL sprain turned out to be nothing serious, as Troy Schulte of MiLB.com reported last summer. Other than that, Ivey was electric for Double-A Corpus Christi, going 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 61 strikeouts over 46 innings. That came after posting a 2.97 ERA with 135 punchouts in 112 innings over two levels the previous season. The right-hander credited his strong results to improved command. "In the beginning, they tell you to just throw everything and develop everything," he said. "Then as time goes on, you want to try to be able to put it where you want it." He's expected to start at Double-A in 2020 with a promotion to Triple-A Round Rock likely if he continues on his current trajectory.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Back from suspension
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey (suspension) went five innings without allowing a hit in Double-A Corpus Christi's 2-1 win over Amarillo on Saturday.

Ivey fanned eight and walked two in his return from suspension. The ban was believed to be related to his April 12 ejection for having a foreign substance on his glove. The 23-year-old righty has covered five innings in each of his last three appearances with Corpus Christi, allowing a total of five hits with a 23:3 K:BB in that span. There are a number of arms ahead of him in the Astros organization, but Ivey is an impressive prospect in his own right, one we could see debut early on next season.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Suspended at Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey, who is listed as being on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Corpus Christi, has actually been suspended, Andersen Pickard of MLB Daily Dish reports. According to Astros minor-league blogger Jayne Hansen, Ivey was suspended for 14 games.

Hansen suggests that the suspension could be related to an incident in Ivey's April 12 start in which he was removed from the game after a foreign substance was found on his glove. If it is indeed a 14-game suspension, Ivey should return around May 13. He has a 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 23:4 K:BB in 16 innings this season.

Astros' Tyler Ivey: Dominating at Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Ivey gave up two hits while striking out eight in five innings of relief Wednesday for Double-A Corpus Christi.

He now boasts a 0.82 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB in 11 innings this season through three appearances. The Astros like to piggyback starters in the minors, so Ivey may not always be the first to take the ball, but he will typically log at least four innings per outing. Ivey has a quality low-90s fastball and a pair of breaking balls that could each become plus offerings. He could reach the majors in the first half of the 2020 season.
