Gonzalez started at first base and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to Atlanta. Gonzalez was activated off the injured list Wednesday and was in the starting lineup against left-hander Chris Sale. It was Gonzalez's first career start at first base. The versatile infielder is expected to see significant playing time against southpaws, and the Red Sox will see two lefties in the upcoming three-game set against Washington. Boston manager Alex Cora told Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe that Gonzalez swings the bat well and feels he can lengthen the lineup from the seventh spot in the order. Nos. 7-9 in Boston's lineup were batting just .209 entering Wednesday's game.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Returns from injured list
The Red Sox activated Gonzalez (wrist) from the 10-day injured list. He'll start at first base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against Atlanta. Gonzalez missed nearly a month of action with a left wrist sprain but has been cleared to return after playing three minor-league rehab games. He'll fill a utility role with Boston and is likely to see the majority of his starts versus left-handed pitching.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Expected to return Wednesday
The Red Sox are expected to reinstate Gonzalez (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Gonzalez has been on the injured list since April 13 due to a left wrist sprain, and he's gone 4-for-11 with three RBI since beginning a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Friday. Once activated, the 27-year-old infielder will presumably move into a reserve role behind Vaughn Grissom and Ceddanne Rafaela.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Return not imminent
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Gonzalez (wrist) isn't progressing as hoped and isn't considered close to a return from the 10-day injured list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13 with a left wrist sprain, and after an MRI revealed no structural damage, the expectation was that the infielder would be ready rejoin the Red Sox after a minimum-length stay on the shelf. However, with Gonzalez still experiencing stiffness in his wrist and having yet to resume baseball activities, he looks poised to remain out until some time in May.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: MRI comes back negative
An MRI on Gonzalez's left wrist came back negative Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Gonzalez felt pain while taking swings Wednesday, but it appears he's avoided a serious setback. The Red Sox still figure to shut him down for a bit to let the wrist calm down. Gonzalez had been hoping for a return from the injured list when his 10 days are up, but that's unlikely now.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Suffers setback
Gonzalez (wrist) felt pain while taking swings Wednesday and is scheduled to undergo an MRI, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. The 27-year-old appeared to be progressing well after being placed on the injured list over the weekend with a wrist sprain, but his immediate outlook is hazy after the setback. Gonzalez will be eligible to return from the injured list Sunday, but he now seems likely to be sidelined beyond the 10-day minimum.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Lands on IL
Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left wrist sprain, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Fortunately, Gonzalez avoided a fracture, but he'll still be out until at least April 21 due to the injury. Cooper Criswell, who is starting Saturday's game against the Angels, was recalled in a corresponding move. The Red Sox may have to slide Ceddanne Rafaela to second base against lefties and Pablo Reyes to shortstop, unless they are willing to play David Hamilton against same-handed pitchers.... Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Dealing with wrist injury
Gonzalez injured his left wrist during Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Gonzalez said he doesn't believe his injury to be serious, though he is wearing a splint and will get an X-ray on his wrist just to be sure. He's currently viewed as day-to-day, but a better idea of when he might be able to play again will likely come once the results of his imaging come back.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Begins platoon at shortstop
Gonzalez started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to Baltimore. Gonzalez made his first start as part of planned platoon at shortstop. He was in the lineup against Orioles left-hander Cole Irvin, and the lefty-hitting David Hamilton will fill the strong side of the platoon. Hamilton is expected to start Thursday against righty Grayson Rodriguez.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Platooning at shortstop
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that David Hamilton and Gonzalez will form a platoon at shortstop after Trevor Story (shoulder) landed on the injured list, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Gonzalez was called up by Boston on Monday and should fill the small side of the platoon, with the lefty-hitting Hamilton likely to see most starts against righties. The Red Sox could change course at some point since Story is out for the season, but Gonzalez will have a chance to carve out a regular role in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Called up by Red Sox
The Red Sox called up Gonzalez from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox optioned Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester. Gonzalez had a strong start to his minor-league season, slashing .321/.375/.821 with three home runs and 10 RBI over 32 plate appearances. He'll bring some infield depth and a right-handed bat for the Red Sox and should get starts against left-handed pitching. Gonzalez saw time at second base, shortstop and first base at Triple-A.... Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Starting season in minors
Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. Gonzalez was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox this offseason and was competing for a utility role this spring. However, he struck out 27.8 percent of the time with only a .670 OPS across 36 plate appearances and will now be set to begin the regular season in the minors.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Looks healthy in spring training
Gonzalez (shoulder) has appeared in 10 Grapefruit League games to date, going 3-for-20 with one home run, one stolen base and seven strikeouts against zero walks. Gonzalez, whom the Red Sox claimed off waivers from the White Sox in January, hasn't faced any restrictions this spring after his 2023 campaign was cut short when he underwent surgery last July to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Though he occupies a spot on Boston's 40-man roster and is contention for a spot on the Opening Day squad as a utility player, Gonzalez still has two minor-league options remaining, which may work against him in the roster competition.... Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Changes Sox from White to Red
The Red Sox claimed Gonzalez (shoulder) off waivers from the White Sox on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. It's unclear whether Gonzalez will be ready for Opening Day after having surgery on his right shoulder labrum last July, which could have affected the White Sox' decision to try to slip him through waivers. Gonzalez brings defensive versatility to the table along with a 90.4 mph average exit velocity during his 86 games in the majors. Gonzalez also has a 36 percent strikeout rate and 2.1 percent walk rate during that span, numbers which surely will need to improve if he wants to make an impact in Boston.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Loses 40-man roster spot
Gonzalez (shoulder) was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. The club needed to clear a spot on its 40-man roster for the addition of John Brebbia. Gonzalez underwent surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and it's not clear whether he'll be healthy in time for Opening Day. The 27-year-old will now go through the waiver process.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Undergoes shoulder surgery
Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in mid-July, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. This news was just revealed by the White Sox on Friday, and it helps to explain why Gonzalez was transferred to the 60-day IL just before the All-Star break. The 26-year-old right-hander is aiming to be ready for the start of spring training in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Shifts to 60-day IL
The White Sox transferred Gonzalez (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Though Gonzalez was officially diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation upon landing on the 10-day IL on June 19, he'll wind up missing at least two months -- well beyond the timeline typically associated with the injury. With Gonzalez on the shelf until at least the second half of August, Zach Remillard may have some staying power on the White Sox's 26-man active roster as a utility infielder.... See More ... White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Heads to IL with sore shoulder
Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Gonzalez has dealt with the injury for nearly a week and the White Sox finally decided to put him on the IL. He'll be eligible to return on June 28, although it's unclear at this time whether he will be ready by then. Zach Remillard is starting at second base Monday and the White Sox also called up Jose Rodriguez.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Steal, run scored off bench
Gonzalez logged a stolen base and a run scored as a pinch runner in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Dodgers. Gonzalez ran for Eloy Jimenez in the ninth inning as the White Sox rallied for a three-run frame. Over nine contests in June, Gonzalez has gone 3-for-22 with four steals, two RBI and three runs scored. His cold bat could lead to more opportunities for Elvis Andrus at second base. For the season, Gonzalez owns a .194/.208/.376 slash line with seven steals, three home runs, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored over 97 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Pair of RBI in return to lineup
Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Sunday against the Marlins. Gonzalez was back in the lineup after a two-game absence, with Elvis Andrus starting in his place. He delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, only his third hit across 19 at-bats through seven games in June. Gonzalez may find it difficult to earn playing time moving forward so long as Andrus, Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada remain healthy.... See More ... See Less
