Wall helps Wizards hold on for 94-91 win over Magic
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) John Wall had 26 points and 10 assists to help the Washington Wizards hold on for a 94-91 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night.
Wall scored the Wizards' last eight points as Washington held on after surrendering a 19-point, first-quarter lead. Otto Porter Jr. scored 19 for Washington and all five starters finished in double figures.
Serge Ibaka led the Magic with 19 points, while Nikola Vucevic contributed 17 points and 17 rebounds. Elfrid Payton scored 15 points, all in the second half, as Orlando lost its third straight game.
The Wizards trailed 80-76 after Magic guard D.J. Augustin's three-point play with 6:22 left in the game. Washington went on a 7-0 run behind a 3-pointer from Porter and back-to-back layups from Marcin Gortat, who had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Though Orlando cut the deficit to one on two occasions, the Wizards made the lead stand up the rest of the game.
The Magic trailed 26-7 at one point in the first quarter, but patiently worked themselves back into the game by taking care of the ball and turning Washington into jump shooters the final three periods.
Payton, who was scoreless with one assist in the first half, scored nine points and handed out four assists in the third period as Orlando trimmed the deficit to 72-68.
His 20-foot jumper tied the score at 72 with 10:32 left in the game and Evan Fournier gave Orlando its first lead at 77-76 on a 3-pointer from the corner with 8:20 left in the game.
Orlando started the game 2 for 14 (14.2 percent) from the field and committed six turnovers to help fuel a 17-1 run by Washington. The Magic trimmed the deficit to 48-38 by halftime and kept the defensive intensity going to start the second half.
WIZARDS: Washington has won 13 of its last 14 games against Orlando. . The Wizards bench contributed just 12 points and nine rebounds in the game. . This was the 36th time a game between the teams was decided by five points or less. Washington is 19-17 in those games. . The Wizards are (5-5) when Wall and Bradley Beal are the starting backcourt.
MAGIC: Starters Payton and Jeff Green didn't score in the first half and played only 16 minutes between them. Green had seven points. . Orlando had 15 turnovers in the first half, but only four the rest of the game. . Fournier has scored in double figures in 15 of 16 games this season. . During the last seven games, the Magic have limited opponents to just 92.3 points (646 points) and 41.1 percent shooting (239-581)
Wizards: Return home to play San Antonio on Saturday. It's the first of four straight games against Western Conference teams.
Magic: Host Milwaukee on Sunday. The Bucks defeated the Magic 93-89 last Monday.
