Remainder of 2019-20 NBA G League season to be canceled
The NBA is set to resume play in late July, but the G League will not be coming back
Early on Thursday afternoon, the NBA Board of Governors voted 29-1 to move forward with the league's proposed return to play plan, which would have games begin on July 31 at Disney World in Orlando. The players will be voting on the proposal on Friday.
But while the NBA looks set to resume play, the G League will not be following suit. The remainder of the 2019-20 G League season has been canceled, according to a press release from the league.
"While canceling the remainder of our season weighs heavily on us, we recognize that it is the most appropriate action to take for our league," said NBA G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim. "I extend my sincere gratitude to NBA G League players and coaches for giving their all to their teams and fans this season. And to our fans, I think you and look forward to resuming play for the 2020-21 season."
Like the NBA, the G League had been suspended since March 11, when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. The league paid all of the players through what would have been the end of the season, and extended their health benefits, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Resuming the season during a pandemic is a massive undertaking for the NBA, and even with all the preventative measures they're taking, there's no guarantee that everyone will remain healthy. But the massive amounts of money on the line makes the risk worth it for many parties involved.
That same financial incentive just doesn't exist for the G League, and so there's little reason to risk everyone's health and safety, nor figure out the logistics.
It remains to be seen whether G League players will be allowed to join their parent clubs for training camp when those being in June, or even if they'll be invited to Orlando if the league decides to expand rosters.
