Payton is planning to sign a two-way contract with the Lakers, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports.
Payton started the season in Milwaukee on a two-way deal but was waived upon that deal expiring. He'll now join the Lakers on the same kind of deal that will allow him to spend up to 45 days with the team. Given that the Lakers currently have solid depth in the backcourt, it's unlikely Payton plays much of a role when in the NBA.
The Bucks plan to waive Payton before Monday, Chris Haynes of ESPN.com reports.
With Payton's two-way contract set to expire Monday after he accrued 45 days of service time in the NBA, the Bucks determined it wasn't in their best interest to sign the point guard to a guaranteed deal. Instead, the Bucks plan to use the open roster spot to sign guard Sean Kilpatrick, according to Haynes, with Milwaukee apparently valuing the potential scoring punch Kilpatrick can provide off the bench. Payton, who has appeared in the Bucks' last five games, is averaging 2.7 points on 40.6 percent shooting from the field over 9.2 minutes per contest on the season. He'll likely land in the G League if he's unable to secure another contract from an NBA team.
Payton will come off the bench Saturday against the Rockets, Matt Velazquez of the Journal Sentinel reports.
Payton made a handful of starts in the wake of an injury to Tony Snell, but he'll return to the bench Saturday as Milwaukee goes with DeAndre Liggins at the two. Regardless of his role, Payton's minutes have been difficult to projection a night-to-night basis, bu the Oregon State product is an afterthought in most fantasy formats.
Payton, with Tony Snell (knee) out, will draw a start during Friday's game against the Mavericks, Matt Velazquez of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Though Payton will draw the start, there's a strong chance Malcolm Brogdon, a combo guard, absorbs most of Snell's minutes. Even in DFS, Payton is likely a longshot to be fantasy relevant, as he's played just 45 total minutes with the Bucks, accruing 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Payton was assigned to the G-League's Wisconsin Herd on Friday.
Payton has seen just 45 minutes of run for the Bucks this year, totaling 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Heading down to the G-League should afford him some more playing time and in-game experience.
