Chad Johnson is coming back to Browns camp and he's not leaving
Johnson was invited to camp as a coaching intern and has no plans to leave any time soon
The Cleveland Browns do not have the greatest wide receiver corps. Beyond Josh Gordon, who hasn't played professional football since 2014 (and hasn't played at a high level since 2013) and is suspended for the first four games of the season, all the Browns have at the position are rookies Corey Coleman, Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins, Jordan Payton, and Dennis Parks, plus Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel, and Marlon Moore. It's entirely possible the most-talented wideout in Browns camp is coaching intern Chad Johnson, who was last seen on the field in 2011, when he did not play particularly well for the Patriots.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson, who used to coach Johnson with the Bengals, invited him to camp as a coaching intern this year. Johnson showed up for the first two days of camp and gave the wideouts some instruction, then left abruptly. Jackson indicated the former Pro Bowler might not be back.
Not so fast, my friend. "You really thought I was leaving?'' Johnson asked, per Cleveland.com. "This is the funny thing. Hue Jackson allowed me to come in as an intern. I never told Hue I was leaving, so he's stuck with me until they force me to leave. I'll be here through January.''
In response to a follow-up question about whether Jackson knows that Johnson has no plans to leave, "No, but you can be the first to break the news,'' Johnson said. "I agreed to come. I didn't say I was gonna leave.''
Johnson apparently left after the first two days of camp to go see his daughter, who is about to leave for the Junior Olympics. She's a sprinter and he now won't be able to go to the games with her because he's concentrating on his coaching gig.
"I had to explain to her, 'you've got to go out there and run well and be able to do so without me being here because I have to be in Cleveland,'' he said. "That's something I needed to be able to tell my daughter face to face, not over the phone, not via text and she has to understand that daddy has to work. She's one of the fastest in the world and it would kill her for me not to be there.''
This is obviously all pretty strange. Coaching interns usually stay as long as they're asked to and then leave. But I think Browns fans should be excited. The last time someone showed up to a Cleveland training camp and just refused to leave, it was Willie Mays Hayes. And that worked out well for everyone.

Cleveland is on quite a roll right now, with the Cavs winning the NBA championship and the (real) Indians in position to make a World Series run. Maybe the Browns are going to be better than we think. (OK, probably not. But it's fun to think about.)
