Before, it was all about the attack. Now, it’s more read and react.

The Eagles changed defensive line coaches this week, with veteran Tommy Brasher taking over for the fired Jim Washburn. Under Washburn, the Eagles played the wide-nine defensive front, which put a premium on getting off the ball quickly and getting to the quarterback repeatedly. That system got mixed reviews here, and now it’s gone. Brasher teaches a style that isn’t as flashy but is more consistent, especially against the run.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles embraced the wide-nine because it was the defense du jour, but he said he’s not having any problem dealing with the change in approach, and he doesn’t think his players will have much of a problem, either.

“It’s not going to happen overnight because it’s a different teaching from what they’ve been learning,’’ Bowles said. “But I think they’ll grasp it pretty quick.”

Most defenses don’t have to change this drastically this late in the season, but defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins was philosophical about it.

“It doesn’t matter whether it is hard or not,’’ he said. “We’re expected to do it, learn it, adjust. We just have to deal with it.”
