Jamal Adams trade rumors: Jets' Adam Gase says he wants All-Pro safety to stay with New York
The Jets' head coach is hoping things can be rectified between the team and their star player

Adam Gase fielded questions on Friday regarding the future of All-Pro safety Jamal Adams, who requested a trade away from the Jets earlier this week. Adams, who is reportedly disgruntled over not having a new contract as well as reports that the Jets explored trading him before last year's deadline, has reportedly listed the Cowboys as one of the teams he would be interested in playing for if New York decides to trade him.
Gase, who is entering his second season as the Jets' head coach, is hoping that Adams is not dealt to a new team before the start of the 2020 season.
"Yes, I want Jamal on our team," Gase said, via ESPN's Rich Cimini.
Gase, who characterized his relationship with Adams as "good," would not say publicly whether or not the Jets would be interested in signing Adams to a long-term contract before the start of the regular season. The sixth overall pick in the 2017 draft, Adams is entering the final year of a rookie contract that will pay him a guaranteed salary of $3.5 million this season. Adams' current market value is a six-year contact that would pay him an average of $14.7 million annually, according to Spotrac.
"Tough part of the business ... one of best players working through things with the organization," Gase said of Adams' current situation with the Jets. "Gotta figure out a way to get to a good place."
Gase's comments come a day after Adams received public support from Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Adams enjoyed his first All-Pro season during Williams' first season as his defensive coordinator.
"You never mess with a guy's contract," Williams said, per The Athletic. "I have his back on that."
Adams would reportedly prefer a trade to either the Ravens, Cowboys, Texans, Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers, Seahawks and Buccaneers. You can read more about potential landing spots here.
The drama surrounding Adams has overshadowed the fact that the Jets are coming off a 2019 season that saw them win five out of their last seven games to finish with a 7-9 record. While their defense was a big reason for their late-season surge, the continued development of quarterback Sam Darnold also played a considerable large role in New York's success during that stretch. Darnold has reportedly begun holding practices with some of his skill position teammates down in Florida.
If the Jets are going to legitimately contend for a playoff spot in 2020, they're likely going to need Adams, whose status with the team is currently up in the air with about a month until training camp is slated to start. Williams is hoping that whatever friction that currently exists between Adams and the organization can be extinguished sooner rather than later.
"I want him to feel good about being here and everything that's going on," Williams said. "I can't wait to coach him again."
