New Jets running back Matt Forte sets two incredibly lofty goals
Matt Forte wants to win a Super Bowl and win the rushing title.
It's that time of year again, when nearly every team around the league signs a few free agents and, as a result, each fanbase talks itself into believing that this is the year its team will compete for the Super Bowl. But, apparently, that kind of talk isn't limited to fans.
Matt Forte, who signed a three-year contract with the Jets after spending the first eight years of his career with the Bears, set two incredibly lofty goals: He wants to win a Super Bowl and lead the league in rushing.
"To the people of New York," Forte said in an Instagram message, "I could not be more excited for the opportunity to play for yet another legendary organization. The passionate fan base and culture that Coach Bowles has instilled were a huge draw. I hope to bring a championship home as well as a rushing title, like one of your greats, Curtis Martin. J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!"
Well, that's ambitious. As it stands, the Jets don't even have a starting quarterback on their roster. And it looks like their two options are Ryan Fitzpatrick (who isn't really worthy of starting) and Robert Griffin III (who is reportedly visiting New York). Then, there's the fact that the Jets have to go through the AFC East, which includes the Patriots. That's not the say the Jets are a bad team -- they're certainly not, considering they won 10 games last year -- it's just hard to see them as a Super Bowl team in 2016.
As for Forte's second goal, that seems even more unlikely. Again, that's not to say Forte is a bad running back -- he's not -- it's just hard to see him running for more yards than players like Adrian Peterson and Todd Gurley, especially considering he's 30 years old and has never rushed for more than 1,339 yards in a single season. Forte's value is in his versatility; he's one of the best pass-catching backs in the league. And the Jets would be smart to use him in different ways, which might limit his carries coming out of the backfield.
So, to conclude, the Jets are a good team and Matt Forte is a good player. But, until the Jets find a decent quarterback and Matt Forte learns to age backwards, those two goals probably won't turn into reality.
