Two years after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to deal with a MRSA outbreak, the New York Giants are doing the same, according to an ESPN.com report.

Giants tight end Daniel Fells has been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of MRSA, and the team is taking precautions against the spread of infection, writes Dan Graziano. That includes scrubbing the locker room, training room and meeting rooms.

The Mayo Clinic explains that MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) "is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections." It can be life-threatening, though Fells is expected to be okay, a source told Graziano.

"We are working with infectious disease specialists, and we have defined protocols that we are following in consultation with the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network and local infectious disease specialists," Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said. "Those protocols are being followed carefully."

During the 2013 season, Buccaneers cornerback Johnthan Banks, guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes were diagnosed with MRSA, and Tynes sued the team for $20 million for "lost salary and substantial pain and suffering." Neither Nicks nor Tynes has played since. Banks didn't miss a game that season.
