According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Houston Texans' quarterback battle is over. Barring injury, Brian Hoyer will be the team's starter for its Week 1 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hoyer was pitted against Ryan Mallett in a battle for the starting job by head coach Bill O'Brien. Through two preseason games, Hoyer is 9-15 for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Mallett has completed 15 of 18 passes for 113 yards. Hoyer got the start in Houston's first preseason game while Mallett played with the No. 1 offense in the second contest.

Hoyer, 29, is considered the more known quantity of the two QBs, having thrown 630 career passes compared to Mallett's 79. Hoyer started 17 combined games over the last three years in Arizona and Cleveland, amassing a 10-7 record while completing 58.0 percent of his passes for 7.3 yards per attempt and throwing 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Mallett spent the first three years of his career as Tom Brady's backup in New England, just like Hoyer. He came to the Texans in a trade prior to last season. He appeared in three games, starting two (during which Houston went 1-1) and completing 41 of 75 passes for 400 yards (5.3 per attempt), two touchdowns and two picks.

The Texans will be without star running back Arian Foster for at least part of the season due to a groin injury, so Hoyer will have a lot more responsibility on his plate than the team originally planned for.
