Saints get a C for making Garrett Grayson third QB of 2015 NFL Draft
The New Orleans Saints selected Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson with the 78th pick.
With the 78th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints picked quarterback Garrett Grayson out of Colorado State.
CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco gave the Saints a C for the pick:
I guess they are really coming to the end of the Drew Brees era. But is this the long-term answer?
The pick is curious for the Saints, who have a ton of needs all over the place, to take a quarterback in the third round where there was still a lot of talent available. Drew Brees' time in New Orleans is clearly coming to a close soon, but, as Prisco said, Grayson doesn't project as a starting caliber quarterback in the league.
Grayson played for Jim McElwain at Colorado State and is a guy that is solid as a passer, but is not exceptional at any one thing. He has good enough arm strength to make all of the NFL throws and has solid footwork in the pocket.
For an on-field scouting report, we have this tidbit from Rob Rang and Dane Brugler:
"Good instincts for the position. Keeps his eyes downfield and shows good spatial awareness to slide up and laterally in the pocket to avoid rushers and extend the play. Good overall athleticism for the position, showing balance and coordination when asked to roll out, as well as good accuracy. Good touch on deep passes, including wheel routes, post-corners and verticals. The ball doesn't explode out of his hand on intermediate routes but he shows good zip on quick passes and isn't to challenge tight windows over the middle.
Grayson has a unique wind-up and delivery of the ball that could irk some scouts. His delivery is slower than most and he holds the ball further back, theoretically leaving it all the more vulnerable for defenders to slap away."
