  • Donnel Pumphrey: Headed to Lions' practice squad

The Lions plan to add Pumphrey to their practice squad, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Bringing Pumphrey aboard gives the Lions added depth behind Kerryon Johnson, LeGarrette Blount, Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah. At 5-foot-9, 176 pounds, Pumphrey isn't ideally suited for every-down work, but he can at least provide Detroit with an in-house change-of-pace alternative to Riddick.

  • Donnel Pumphrey: Lands with Lions' practice squad

The Lions added Pumphrey to their practice squad Wednesday, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

A 2017 fourth-rounder, Pumphrey was did not appear in a single regular-season game during his injury riddled rookie season. Pumphrey provides additional depth to a Lions running back room already consisting of Kerryon Johnson, LeGarrette Blount, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick. The 23-year-old's 5-foot-9, 176-pound frame likely limits his potential as an every-down back, but Pumphrey could tentatively find a spot behind Riddick if he shows well as a pass catcher.

  • Donnel Pumphrey: Let go by Eagles

The Eagles released Pumphrey on Saturday, Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com reports.

A fourth-round selection in 2017, Pumphrey was injury prone during his entire tenure with the Eagles and didn't appear in a single regular-season game. • Eagles' Donnel Pumphrey: Expects to play Thursday

Pumphrey (hamstring) expects to see the field in Thursday's preseason game against the Jets, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Pumphrey also said that his hamstring "feels good" after being limited in yesterday's practice. The 2017 fourth-rounder spent last season on injured reserve following a dismal training camp, but has bulked up since his rookie season. Even if Pumphrey can show well against the Jets, he isn't a lock to make the 53-man roster behind Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement and Darren Sproles.

  • Eagles' Donnel Pumphrey: Will work into practice Sunday

Pumphrey (hamstring) will practice in a limited fashion Sunday, Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

Earlier in the week Pumphrey said he was "100 percent," but the doctors are still exercising caution. The 2017 fourth-round pick has yet to play in a preseason game, and even if he plays Thursday against the Jets, it won't be against the starters. Pumphrey's odds are slim to beat out Wendell Smallwood for the No. 4 RB position.
