Gathings spent time on the Chiefs' practice squad last season and signed a reserve/future deal with Kansas City in February before being cut May 4. The 23-year-old out of Middle Tennessee joins a deep Pittsburgh tight end corps that is headed by Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward, though that group was relatively unproductive last season.

Gathings was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in May before being let go last Sunday. In his final collegiate season at Middle Tennessee, Gathings caught 60 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns. He'll compete for a depth spot in a tight end room led by Travis Kelce and Noah Gray.

The Jets signed Gathings as an undrafted free agent Monday.
Gathings participated in the Jets' rookie minicamp as a tryout player, and he did enough to earn himself an extended look. The 6-foot-4 tight end caught 71 passes for 1,046 yards and 11 scores for Gardner-Webb in 2019, but he transferred to Middle Tennessee State for his final two collegiate campaigns, totaling 84 receptions for 861 yards and three scores during that stretch.
