Nzeocha was waived by the Cowboys on Monday, Nick Eatman of the team's official site reports.
After the Cowboys acquired linebacker Jayrone Eliott in a trade from the Packers, Nzeocha was the casualty. Nzeocha played in six games last season and recorded three tackles. He's eligible to join the team as a practice squad member if he clears waivers.
Recovery from a knee scope in June slightly delayed the start of his training camp, but the linebacker is now back in the mix. Heading into his third NFL season, Nzeocha has only three tackles in eight career games, but he could see his role expand in 2017, depending on the availability of Damien Wilson, who could be facing a suspension for an off-field incident, and Jaylon Smith (knee).
Nzeocha (knee) could open training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab his knee injury, ESPN's Todd Archer reports.
Nzeocha underwent a minor cleanup procedure in early June and was originally expected to be back in time for training camp, but it sounds as if that timetable may have been a little optimistic. Although it didn't help that the Cowboys are one of the first teams to open training camp on July 22, Nzeocha should still be back in action sooner rather than later.
Nzeocha simply underwent a cleanup procedure to avoid further damage, and he should make a full recovery by the time training camp rolls around. He'll be competing for snaps at middle linebacker as he heads into his third year in the league, but Jaylon Smith (knee) and Anthony Hitchens will likely see most of the work at the position.
Nzeocha (achilles) is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
Nzeocha has been dealing with an achilles injury since the preseason, but will finally suit up in Week 5 against the Bengals. He will provide depth at middle linebacker behind starter Anthony Hitchens.
