Zettel was waived by the Lions on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Despite a 2017 season in which Zettel led the Lions with 31 quarterback hurries, the 2016 sixth-rounder was unable to stick with Detriot. Zettle was released to make room for defensive end Romeo Okwara, and the third-year pass rusher will now look to find a home elsewhere in the league.
Zettel tallied 43 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 16 games in 2017.
Zettel took a step forward in his second season, ultimately grading out as Pro Football Focus' 11th ranked 4-3 defensive end against the run. The 2016 sixth-rounder also proved to be a serviceable pass rusher opposite Pro Bowler Ezekiel Ansah and, while he didn't come close to Ansah's 12 sacks, Zettel nonetheless led the Lions with 31 quarterback hurries. He isn't quite in the IDP conversation yet, but he's still under contract with Detroit for two more seasons and should only continue to develop.
Zettel (groin) is listed as active for Sunday's tilt against the Packers.
Zettel appeared to have suffered a minor groin injury in practice at some point late in the week, but he'll be good to go in the Lions' season finale. He's slated to start at defensive end per usual, but if a setback were to occur, Cornelius Washington and Dwight Freeney could see additional snaps.
Zettel is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers with a groin injury.
Zettel seemingly injured his groin in practice Friday. If he isn't able to recover by Sunday, Cornelius Washington and Dwight Freeney could be pushed into expanded roles.
