Tillery (shoulder) recorded three tackles (two solo) and a sack in the 19-17 preseason loss to the Saints on Sunday.
Tillery certainly had a promising preseason debut, recording a sack in the second quarter. The 2019 first-round pick has been practicing off and on since the onset of training camp, but Sunday's designation should confirm Tillery will be available Week 1 of the regular season as part of a fearsome front four.
Tillery (shoulder) will not play in Thursday's preseason contest, Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com reports.
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the Chargers have been extra cautious with their first-round pick. The defensive end has seen plenty of practice time during training camp, so this designation feels more precautionary than reactionary, and it's quite possible the 22-year-old could make his preseason debut next week.
General manager Tom Telesco said Wednesday that Tillery (shoulder) has been cleared to practice, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Tillery had surgery in March to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, and Telesco continued on to say that the team will "gradually work him in" during training camp. This is still great news for the 28th-overall pick in April's draft, as he'll get to learn along side Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa during his first NFL training camp. Expect Tillery's reps in camp and the preseason to be closely monitored heading into Week 1.
Tillery (shoulder) did not practice Friday during the team's rookie minicamp, Eric D. Williams of ESPN.comreports.
Tillery had surgery in March to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, so it makes sense that he'd be unable to practice, particularly given his 3-to-4 month recovery timeline. Expect the 2019 first-round pick to be available come the start of the team's official training camp in August.
The Chargers selected Tillery (torn labrum) in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 28th overall.
Los Angeles gets more ammo for an already loaded front by adding Tillery out of Notre Dame. At 6-foot-6 and 295 pounds with 34 1/4-inch arms, Tillery is a long-levered athlete who bolstered his stock with a strong combine that was highlighted by a 4.93 40-yard dash and a 4.33-second short shuttle. His frame doesn't project well to play on the interior, but he did his best work outside the guard and outside the tackle at Notre Dame anyway. He figures to be a rotational piece behind Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram to start his career, but don't be surprised if he carves out a significant role for the Chargers before long.
