Giants' Xavier McKinney: Preparing to return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants designated McKinney (foot) to return from injured reserve Monday.

McKinney will return to practice Monday, opening the 21-day window for him to be activated from IR. The rookie second-round pick out of Alabama has yet to make his NFL debut after undergoing surgery to repair a broken foot in August. Once he's ready, the Giants may ease him into action behind starting safeties Jabrill Peppers and Logan Ryan.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Still lined up for post-bye return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McKinney (foot) is likely to see his 21-day window to return from injured reserve begin in the next couple weeks, with a target activation date coming sometime after the Giants' Week 11 bye, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

This falls right in line with reports from a few weeks ago that suggested McKinney wouldn't see the field until after the bye week. The second-round pick has barely seen the practice field this year after he underwent surgery to address a fractured left foot in late August. There will likely be a bit of a learning curve upon his official return, but per league rules, he'll have a maximum of three weeks to get acclimated on the practice field before the Giants must activate him.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Unlikely to play before bye
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McKinney (foot) isn't expected to make his NFL debut until after New York's Week 11 bye, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports.

McKinney's still recovering from offseason surgery to repair a broken fifth metatarsal in his foot, leaving the rookie second-rounder's NFL debut on hold. He was projected to start from the get-go prior to his injury, but it looks like the safety won't see the field until Week 12 against the Bengals at the earliest.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Placed on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants placed McKinney on injured reserve Sunday, Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York reports.

McKinney was forced to undergo surgery to repair a fractured foot last week, so this news isn't surprising. Following surgery, he'll look to retake the field after the Giants' bye week in late November, which occurs in Week 12. In the meantime, look for recent acquisition Logan Ryan to handle starting free safety duties to begin the season.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Hoping for November return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McKinney (foot) hopes to retake the field after the Giants' bye week in late November, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

McKinney underwent surgery on his fractured left foot, but it's possible that he won't lose his entire rookie campaign due to the injury. The second-round pick could make a return following the Giants' bye in Week 12, which would allow him roughly three months to get fully healthy. Prior to suffering the injury, McKinney looked primed to handle a key role in New York's secondary right off the bat.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Needs foot surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McKinney is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday to address a fractured left foot, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.

The Giants also learned Wednesday that starting inside linebacker David Mayo will require surgery to repair a torn meniscus, with both he and McKinney expected to open the season on injured reserve as a result of their injuries. The absences of Mayo and McKinney are a tough pair of blows to a Giants defense that already appeared thin on talent. The second-round rookie could be back for the second half of the season, but the Giants will need Julian Love or Nate Ebner to cover free safety in McKinney's stead for the time being.

Giants' Xavier McKinney: Scooped by Giants
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants selected McKinney in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, 36th overall.

It's not a deep safety class but McKinney is arguably the best of the bunch. The Alabama product has a nose for finding the ball carrier, racking up 95 tackles as a junior in 2019, but he also has natural coverage instincts as evidenced by his three picks and eight pass breakups this past season as well. McKinney lacks elite athleticism -- he ran a 4.63 40-yard dash -- but his instincts from the safety spot help keep him in position. He will push for playing time next to Jabrill Peppers in the defensive backfield.
