The Saints waived Smith on Friday, Herbie Teope of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Smith spent his last two seasons with the Giants on their practice squad. He wound up getting signed by the Saints mid-camp, but he ultimately will not make their final 53-man roster. However, he does figure to be a candidate for the team's practice squad.
Smith signed a contract with the Saints on Sunday, Herbie Teope of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Smith played 13 games for the Giants across the last two seasons, making most of his impact on special teams. The third-year pro will compete to stand out behind fellow fullbacks Zach Line and Michael Burton in New Orleans.
Smith worked out for the 49ers on Friday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Smith's last NFL action was in September 2018, when he logged nine snaps on offense and 32 snaps on special teams over two games for the Giants. The San Jose State product has been a free agent since then, but can give himself a chance to make a roster this offseason.
Smith was waived by the Giants on Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports.
Smith's value in the Big Apple took a hit when the team opted to bring on Elijhaa Penny to help out at the fullback position. As a rookie last season, Smith appeared in 11 games for the Giants.
