  • Devils' Travis Zajac: Announces retirement

Zajac will retire as a New Jersey Devil after signing a one-day contract with the club Monday.

Zajac spent 15 years playing for the Devils before being traded to the Islanders at the deadline this past season. Selected by New Jersey with the 20th overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, the 36-year-old center racked up 203 goals and 349 assists in 1,037 NHL games plus another 30 points in 71 playoff contests.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Opens scoring Wednesday

Zajac scored a goal on his only shot and had three hits in Wednesday's 6-2 win over Boston in Game 6.

The 36-year-old finally netted his first goal of the playoffs, cleaning up a rebound in front to break a scoreless tie midway through the opening period. Zajac has two points and a plus-4 rating in seven postseason games.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Slots in Wednesday

Zajac will suit up in Wednesday's Game 6 against Pittsburgh, Brian Compton of NHL.com reports.

Zajac was a healthy scratch through the first five games of the series, but he'll replace Oliver Wahlstrom, who's dealing with an undisclosed injury and can't play. Zajac has seen action in 57 playoff games in his career, recording 11 goals and 28 points over that span. The 36-year-old will add a veteran presence to the third line Wednesday.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Could play Wednesday

Zajac could enter the lineup Wednesday versus the Penguins, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. He's been a healthy scratch for all five games of the series so far.

Zajac would take the place of Oliver Wahlstrom (undisclosed) should he be forced to miss the game. Coach Barry Trotz may feel the veteran Zajac is the safe play, as he has plenty of experience versus the Penguins, but Zajac also only has one goal and one assist for the Islanders since being acquired at the trade deadline.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Yet to play in playoffs

Zajac has yet to dress for any of the playoff games versus the Penguins.

Zajac was acquired along with Kyle Palmieri at the trade deadline, but he was always considered a spare part, as the Islanders are already deep down the middle with Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Casey Cizikas. Coach Barry Trotz tried to insert Zajac at wing on several lines, but when that didn't work, there really wasn't a spot for him in a healthy Islanders lineup. As a result, Zajac continues to be insurance for the Islanders.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Out Monday

Zajac is a healthy scratch for Monday's game against Boston, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Zajac will sit for the final game of the regular season after he was held scoreless in his final six games. The 35-year-old finishes the 2020-21 season with 20 points in 46 games between the Islanders and Devils.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Healthy scratch Thursday

Zajac was a healthy scratch for the first time as an Islander in the 1-0 shootout loss to the Capitals on Thursday, Neil Best of Newsday reports.

Someone had to come out of the lineup when Cal Clutterbuck was cleared to play, and Zajac was it. Zajac is sort of a fish without water on the Islanders. He's a center, but the team already has four options in Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Casey Cizikas. Coach Barry Trotz seems to prefer to play Leo Komarov on the top line rather than Zajac. The Islanders don't want to mess with the chemistry of the second line, which leaves the third line or bust for Zajac. Thursday it was bust, but Trotz did make a point of saying his benching is unlikely to be a multi-game absence.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Scores first goal in new colors

Zajac scored a goal on his only shot and added two hits in Thursday's 4-1 loss to Boston.

Zajac, who was acquired from New Jersey at the trade deadline, converted a Mathew Barzal centering feed to get the Islanders on the board early in the second period. It was the first goal in four games with the Islanders for Zajac, who skated on the left side of New York's top line with Barzal and Jordan Eberle. Despite the prominent assignment, Zajac isn't likely to offer fantasy managers enough production to warrant a pick-up.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Could play Thursday

Zajac could play Thursday versus the Flyers, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

The original thought was that Kyle Palmieri and Zajac would need to be quarantined after being acquired from the Devils on Wednesday, but that apparently is not the case given that their previous team played nearby. Whether or not either plays Thursday will be up to coach Barry Trotz after he observes them in the morning skate.

  • Islanders' Travis Zajac: Sent to Islanders

The Devils traded Zajac and Kyle Palmieri to the Islanders on Wednesday for A.J. Greer, Mason Jobst, a 2021 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 fourth-round draft pick.

Zajac is moving on after 1,024 games with the Devils. The 35-year-old has put up seven goals and 11 assists across 33 games this season. Zajac typically plays center, but the Islanders already have plenty of depth at the position, so he may need to try playing wing to start. Nevertheless, he should have a role on one of the top three lines as the Islanders load up for a Stanley Cup run.

  • Devils' Travis Zajac: Lights lamp twice in loss

Zajac scored two goals in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Capitals.

He potted the Devils' first and last goals of the afternoon, giving Zajac his first multi-goal performance of the season, but it wasn't quite enough. The 35-year-old has been seeing top-six minutes but it hasn't translated into a dramatic boost in his production, as he has a fairly modest seven goals and 17 points through 32 games.

  • Devils' Travis Zajac: Continues to produce

Zajac tallied a goal and two assists with a pair of shots in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Flyers.

Zajac scored the eventual game-winner with a tap-in on top of the crease that gave the Devils a 4-1 lead with 24 seconds left in the middle frame. He had also assisted on Yegor Sharangovich's tally 10 minutes earlier. Zajac had been a non-factor offensively stretching all the way back to the start of 2019-20, but he's come alive as of late with 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in his last nine contests. The 35-year-old now has four goals and 10 assists in 26 games for the season.

Zajac racked up three assists in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Capitals.

He added two hits, a blocked shot and a plus-3 rating to his ledger. Zajac was a big part of New Jersey even earning a point from this one, as he helped set up the Devils' final two goals in regulation to complete a comeback from a 4-1 deficit. It's Zajac's first multi-point performance of the season, and through 18 games the 35-year-old has only two goals and seven points.

Zajac has missed New Jersey's last four games due to the NHL's COVID-19 protocols, but he'll return to a prominent role Saturday, skating on the Devils' second line and first power-play unit. He's potted two goals through seven games this campaign.

Zajac has gotten a few days of practice under his belt since being activated off the COVID-19 protocols list Wednesday and appears to be on the verge of rejoining the lineup. The 35-year-old forward potted two goals through the first seven games of the campaign before missing time due to the league's virus protocols.
