  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Scores birthday goal

Newhook scored a goal on three shots and blocked one shot over 14:25 of ice time in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Blues. Newhook, who turned 22 on Saturday, scored on his birthday for a second straight season. He gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead midway through the first period by burying his own rebound. It was the third goal over the last four games for Newhook, who has seven points over the last eight. The second-year forward is having a streaky season. Along with his scoring binges, Newhook has an eight-game scoreless run and another stretch during which he had one point over 11 contests. The Avs are looking for more consistency from Newhook, who was selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Points in consecutive outings

Newhook scored a goal in Saturday's 2-1 shootout win over the Kraken. Newhook put the Avalanche up 1-0 at 8:18 of the second period, converting on a loose puck in the Kraken's zone after some extended pressure. This was Newhook's second point in as many games, and he has three goals and two helpers over his last five outings. Injuries up front have pushed him into a third-line center role recently. Newhook is up to 10 goals, 18 points, 66 shots on net, 40 hits, 14 PIM and an even plus-minus rating through 45 appearances.

Newhook logged an assist and two shots on goal in Friday's 4-1 win over the Canucks. Newhook set up Andrew Cogliano for the game's opening goal in the first period. Through nine outings in January, Newhook has put up a respectable two goals and three assists while playing on the third line. The 21-year-old center has 17 points, 66 shots on net, 40 hits and a minus-1 rating in 44 appearances overall.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Career-high three points

Newhook scored two goals and added an assist in Saturday's 7-0 rout of the Senators. The 21-year-old had only one assist over his prior 11 games, but Newhook busted out for a career-best performance in a big night for the Avs. The 2019 first-round pick is still trying to find his footing in the NHL and has just nine goals and 16 points through 41 games on the season, but the upside he flashed Saturday still makes him an asset in keeper and dynasty formats.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Gets maintenance day

Newhook's (face) absence from Friday's practice was for maintenance reasons, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar told Kyle Fredrickson of The Denver Gazette. Newhook was struck in the face by the puck during Thursday's game against Chicago, so his absence from Friday's practice was originally somewhat concerning. If it was just maintenance though, he might be an option Saturday versus Ottawa. He has seven goals and 13 points in 40 games this season.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Not practicing Friday

Newhook (face) is not at practice Friday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports. Newhook took a puck to his face Thursday versus Chicago, and while he managed to finish the contest, he is unable to practice. Newhook has seven goals and 13 points in 40 games this season. Consider Newhook day-to-day.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Ends seven-game slump with helper

Newhook registered an assist and two hits in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Canucks. Newhook was bumped down to the fourth line as recently as last Saturday, but he was back in the middle six Thursday. He helped out on a Samuel Girard goal in the second period of this contest, which ended Newhook's seven-game point drought. The 21-year-old forward is up to 13 points, 54 shots on net, 35 hits and a minus-3 rating through 37 contests overall. The Avalanche are still trying to find his best fit for this season, so it's likely he'll continue to move around the lineup.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Dropped to fourth line

Newhook had four shots on goal and two hits over 14:13 of ice time in Saturday's 6-2 loss to Toronto. Newhook was bumped from a middle-six spot to the bottom trio as part of the domino effect initiated with Nathan MacKinnon's return from an upper-body injury. The second year forward, who opened the year as the center on the second line, has just 12 points in 35 games.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Nets game-winning goal

Newhook scored a goal in Saturday's 3-1 win against Nashville. Newhook's marker at 19:44 of the second period put Colorado up 2-0, and it was ultimately the game-winner. He has seven goals and 12 points in 29 games this season. He entered the contest averaging just 14:42 of ice time, and the 21-year-old will have a hard time making regular offensive contributions unless his role grows.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Helps on lone goal

Newhook had an assist and one hit over 19:53 of ice time in Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Rangers. Newhook had a pretty one-touch pass to set up Mikko Rantanen for Colorado's only goal on 42 shots. He spent the game on the top line, skating with Rantanen and the returning Valeri Nichushkin. Since a new rash of injuries cropped up during the Avalanche's recent road trip, Newhook has averaged 20:35 TOI over the last four games, nearly six minutes above his season average. It's ice time he needs to play due to the injuries, but it's also time earned with an uptick in production. The second-year forward has seven points over the last 11 contests since his one-on-one with head coach Jared Bednar in mid-November.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Nets two goals Monday

Newhook scored two goals, including one with the man advantage, in Colorado's 5-3 loss to Philadelphia on Monday. While Newhook has been limited to six goals and nine points through 23 games this season, he did average 2:43 of power-play ice time from Nov. 21-Dec. 3, and logged 6:32 on Monday. The 21-year-old should have some fantasy value as long as he's getting playing time on the Avalanche's top power-play unit.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Spends minutes on top line

Newhook had two shots on goal and four hits over 20:07 of ice time in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins. The Avalanche spent the last two periods without Artturi Lehkonen (upper body) and used Newhook and Jean-Luc Foudy as replacements on the top line alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. That usage led to a season-high TOI total for Newhook, who also ascended to the top power-play unit for 4:45. If Lehkonen is unable to go Monday in Philadelphia, Newhook is in line for more time with Colorado's most gifted offensive personnel.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Snags goal in win

Newhook scored one goal on two shots over 15:34 of ice time in the Avalanche's 3-2 shootout victory over the Stars on Monday. Prior to the contest, the 21-year-old center had three goals and two assists through 16 games this season. Although Newhook isn't one of the most popular names on Colorado's offense, it appears he has settled into his second-line role and should continue to improve on the stat sheet as he gains more experience in Colorado's top-tier offense.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Picks up assist in win

Newhook had an assist, two shots on goal, one hit and one blocked shot over 15:42 of ice time in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Capitals. Newhook and Josh Manson combined to set up Nathan MacKinnon, who scored on a pretty individual effort. He also had a scoring chance thwarted in the third period. It was the second consecutive game with a point for Newhook, who is working his way out of head coach Jared Bednar's doghouse.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Scores in win

Newhook had a goal on two shots, one hit and two penalty minutes in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win over Carolina. Newhook's play has come under increased scrutiny from head coach Jared Bednar, and the second-line forward followed up a one-on-one with the coach in style. He finished off a mini-breakaway after a pretty feed from Josh Manson and had a couple of other chances. He has just four points (three goals) through 15 games, but this could be an ignitor for Newhook.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Meets with coach

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar had a one-on-one meeting with Newhook to discuss the center's level of play thus far, Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now reports. "We (went) over numbers, where he stands, what we need to see from him," Bednar said. "And then, we (got) specific on detail with the video." Newhook, who was benched for much of the third period in Monday's loss to the Blues, has been tasked with filling the skates of Nazem Kadri as the second-line center. It's a tall task for the 21-year-old, who has three points and 17 shots on goal through 14 games. At the dot, Newhook won only 29 of 94 faceoffs (30.9 percent). He's expected to maintain a top-six presence Thursday in North Carolina for a meeting with the Hurricanes but could be replaced by J.T. Compher if his struggles continue.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Runs afoul of coach

Newhook was benched for a large stretch of the third period in Monday's 3-2 loss to St. Louis, Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now reports. "He's not playing up to the standard I've set for him," head coach Jared Bednar said. Newhook had seven shifts and 6:37 TOI in the first period, then just six shifts and a combined 6:36 TOI over the final two periods. He had a promising two-game stretch in Finland, but the second-line forward has returned to the lackadaisical ways that's characterized much of his season. "Too many turnovers. Not skating and attacking," Bednar added. Newhook has just three points -- two during the series in Finland -- and is minus-4 over 14 games.

  • Avalanche's Alex Newhook: Points in three straight

Newhook scored a goal on three shots and delivered one hit over 16:30 of ice time in Saturday's 5-1 win over Columbus in Finland. Newhook finished off the scoring early in the third period with his second goal of the season. A slow start for the second-line center -- zero points and 10 shots through eight games -- was becoming a minor concern, but the 2019 first-round pick has responded with points (two goals, one assist) in three straight.
