  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Snags four-year deal

Ferraro agreed to terms on a four-year, $13 million contract with San Jose on Thursday. Ferraro finished the season stuck in a 48-game goal drought, during which he managed seven helpers and just 34 shots. As such, fantasy players shouldn't be expecting much out of the blueliner in terms of offensive production, though he can certainly rack up hits and blocks having recorded 140 and 151, respectively, last season.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Posts assist Thursday

Ferraro logged an assist and three blocked shots in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Flames. Ferraro has two assists in three games since he returned from a broken leg. He set up Timo Meier for a shot that deflected in off Logan Couture in the third period of Thursday's game. Ferraro has had his moments on offense during his three NHL campaigns, but he's mostly a physical presence. The defenseman is at 13 points, 131 blocked shots, 109 hits, 38 shots on net and a minus-11 rating through 51 appearances thi season.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Earns helper in return

Ferraro notched an assist, four hits and a minus-2 rating in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Stars. Ferraro logged 21:54 of ice time in his return from a 15-game absence due to a broken leg. He ended up returning about a week earlier than initially expected -- impressive, considering the Sharks had little need to rush him back. The defenseman is up to 12 points, 38 shots on net, 105 hits and 128 blocked shots through 49 appearances. He probably won't add a lot of offense, but his physical play is among the best in the league. Ferraro will likely log top-four minutes for the rest of the season.

Ferraro (leg) has been activated off injured reserve and will return to the lineup Saturday versus Dallas, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. Ferraro is expected to return to a prominent role following his 15-game absence, skating on the second pairing and second power-play unit against the Stars. He's picked up 11 points through 48 contests this season.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Will travel with team

Ferraro (leg) will travel with the Sharks for the team's upcoming two-game toad trip, but he won't play in either contest, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. There's still no timeline for Ferraro's return, and he doesn't appear to be particularly close to rejoining the lineup, but he's nonetheless clearly making progress in his recovery. He's picked up 11 points through 48 contests this season.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Designated for injured reserve

Ferraro (leg) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Considering Ferraro has one point in his last 29 contests, few fantasy managers will be affected by the blueliner's absence. With Ferraro on the shelf for at least 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery Sunday to address a fractured left fibula, Ryan Merkley should see a significant uptick in ice time.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Undergoes surgery

Ferraro underwent surgery on his fibula Sunday. He is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks. Ferraro won't be able to return until at least some time in April and will likely be placed on injured reserve in the coming days. The 23-year-old is averaging 23:19 of ice time through 48 games this season. Nicolas Meloche (undisclosed) might be back in the lineup Sunday against Seattle.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Exits Saturday's contest

Ferraro (lower body) won't return to Saturday's game versus the Bruins. Ferraro needed help getting to the locker room after an awkward fall in the second period. The Sharks are already missing Erik Karlsson (forearm), Jaycob Megna (foot) and Nicolas Meloche (undisclosed) on their blue line, so any absence for Ferraro would be tough to weather. If he can't play Sunday versus the Kraken, expect the Sharks to make a recall from AHL San Jose.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Returning Tuesday

Ferraro (mouth) will be in the lineup to face the Lightning on Tuesday, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. Ferraro missed just one game after taking a puck to the face versus the Panthers on Saturday. Considering he has just one point in his last 22 outings, the blueliner's return is unlikely to impact the majority of fantasy players. Still, in formats that count defensive stats, the Toronto native could offer some value having racked up 89 hits and 110 blocks in 41 games this season.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Could play Tuesday

Ferraro (mouth) will miss Sunday's game in Carolina but could return Tuesday versus the Lightning, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. The defenseman received some dental work but isn't quite ready to return from his Saturday injury. Whenever he does re-enter the lineup, Ferraro figures to play hefty minutes on San Jose's first defense pairing like usual.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Exits Saturday's game

Ferraro (upper body) won't return to Saturday's game versus the Panthers, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Ferraro took a puck to the head in the first period, and that's enough to keep him out of the remainder of the contest. The 23-year-old has no points in his last nine appearances. If he misses more time beyond Saturday, Ryan Merkley could be an option to enter the lineup.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Set to return Thursday

Ferraro (COVID-19 protocols) is expected back in the lineup against the Sabres on Thursday, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. While the news rules Ferraro out for Tuesday's clash with Detroit, the defenseman at least has a return date. In the meantime, Nicolas Meloche figures to continue suiting up versus the Wings. Even once fit, Ferraro won't offer more than low-end fantasy value considering he is pointless in his previous 12 contests.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Enters virus protocols

Ferraro has entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols and won't be available for Thursday's game versus the Flyers. Ferraro will need to return two negative tests to be eligible to return. Forward Jonathan Dahlen was activated from the protocols list in a corresponding move.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Steady at both ends of ice

Ferraro logged an assist and seven blocked shots in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Senators. Ferraro was a shot-blocking machine early in the contest, and he also assisted on a Tomas Hertl goal in the second period. The 23-year-old Ferraro continues to enjoy a breakout season. He has 10 points, 58 blocks, 41 hits and 16 shots on net through 19 contests while playing in a top-pairing role alongside Brent Burns.

Ferraro produced an assist and six hits in Monday's 2-1 overtime win over the Hurricanes. Ferraro earned the secondary helper on Alexander Barabanov's tally in overtime. The assist put Ferraro at eight points (two goals, six assists) through 18 contests, though all but one of his points have come in the last 10 games. The 23-year-old defenseman has added plenty of physicality with 41 hits and 51 blocked shots while playing in a top-four role.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Opens scoring in win

Ferraro scored a goal on two shots, levied three hits and blocked three shots in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Wild. Even with the Sharks' blue line back at full health, Ferraro is finding ways to contribute across the board. He scored 5:55 into Tuesday's contest. The 23-year-old has two goals, five helpers, 15 shots on net, 46 blocks and 34 hits through 15 appearances while cementing his place in the top four.

Ferraro posted an assist, four hits and four blocked shots in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Avalanche. Even with the Sharks' defense corps back at full strength, Ferraro logged a team-high 27:17 of ice time. There's probably no putting the cat back in the bag here -- Ferraro has thrived with five points in six games during November while logging absolutely massive minutes. He's at six points, 43 blocks, 31 hits, 13 shots on net and a minus-1 rating in 14 contests overall.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Posts assist in shootout loss

Ferraro logged an assist, three blocked shots and two hits in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils. Ferraro is on a three-game point streak, during which he's picked up a goal and three helpers. The 23-year-old has helped offset the absence of Erik Karlsson and three other Sharks blueliners, who remain in COVID-19 protocols. Ferraro has five points, 10 shots on net, 31 blocked shots, 25 hits and a minus-1 rating in 11 outings overall, with his recent surge making him a solid choice in DFS for his well-rounded production.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Delivers assist in loss

Ferraro posted an assist, four blocked shots, two hits and two PIM in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Blues. Ferraro set up Nicholas Merkley's second-period tally. With the Sharks' blue line depleted by COVID-19-related absences, Ferraro has stepped up with three points in his last two games. He's at four points, nine shots on net, 28 blocked shots, 23 hits and six PIM through 10 contests overall. With a full season ahead, the Ontario native could push for the 20-point mark for the first time in his career.

  • Sharks' Mario Ferraro: Two points in Tuesday's win

Ferraro scored a goal on three shots, dished an assist, blocked five shots and added four hits in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Sabres. Ferraro's pair of points came in the third period to help the Sharks solidify the lead. The 23-year-old blueliner hasn't made a huge impact on offense with just three points through nine games. He's been more effectively physically with 21 hits and 24 blocked shots while working in a top-four role. With that in mind, Ferraro can likely help fantasy managers in deeper formats, but his lack of scoring will suppress his usefulness in the virtual game.
