  • Flames' Mikael Backlund: Puts together disappointing campaign

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/25/18) Backlund matched his career best of 31 assists in a season in 2017-18, but only scored 14 goals and finished with a minus-21 rating.

The Swedish pivot was looking to extend his streak of 20-plus goals in a season to three, but came up well short despite shooting the puck more than he ever has in a 10-season career. As a result, his 6.5 shooting percentage was his lowest since he played 23 games as a 20-year-old in 2009-10. Having said all that, what might be most alarming about Backlund's 2017-18 campaign was his huge negative rating, as his career plus-minus was plus-17 entering the season and hadn't been a minus player since 2012-13.

    Flames' Mikael Backlund: Available Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/13/18) Backlund (undisclosed) will dress for Tuesday's game against the Oilers, Derek Wills of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.

Backlund skipped Monday's practice session due to the undisclosed issue, but it won't prevent him from taking his usual spot in the lineup for Tuesday's game. His linemates will be slightly different with Matthew Tkachuk (upper body) unavailable Tuesday, however, with Sam Bennett slotted to move into his spot.

Flames' Mikael Backlund: Missing from Monday's practice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/12/18) Backlund sat out Monday's practice with an undisclosed injury and his status for Tuesday's contest against Edmonton is in question, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.

There's no indication as to when Backlund sustained the injury or its severity, though head coach Glen Gulutzan said he would provide an update on the Swedish pivot Tuesday. Whether or not Backlund -- who has 13 goals and 41 points in 70 games -- is able to participate in Tuesday's morning skate will be a good indicator of his game-readiness for later in the day.

Flames' Mikael Backlund: Delivers two points in defeat

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/1/18) Backlund had his team's first goal and an assist Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to Colorado.

The Flames looked like they were in control of the game after Backlund's strong start, but they collapsed as the game progressed and let one get away. Backlund has now scored seven points in three games against the Avalanche this year, but unfortunately for him, the Flames will not play Colorado again this season.

Flames' Mikael Backlund: Big game but scoring still down

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/24/18) Backlund delivered a big, three-point game Saturday in a 5-1 win over Colorado. He scored a goal and added two assists.

It was Backlund's second three-point game this season. His 38 points in 63 games pale in comparison to his 53 last season. And his 11 goals are half of his total from 2016-17. Backlund is a serviceable fantasy asset in deep formats, but there are plenty of other centers in the pool who can deliver more consistent results. He had just a single point in his previous 10 games.
