  • Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Re-signs with Washington

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/27/18) Smith-Pelly signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, NHL Network's Kevin Weekes reports.

The Capitals didn't extend Smith-Pelly a qualifying offer, as the team evidently wasn't comfortable with the idea of going to arbitration with the restricted free agent, but that didn't deter the 26-year-old winger from re-signing with the reigning Stanley Cup champions. Smith-Pelly had a quiet regular season in 2017-18, totaling seven goals and 16 points in 75 contests, but he played a vital role in Washington's postseason run, potting seven more clutch goals and tacking on an assist in 24 games. The 2010 second-round pick will likely continue to be a solid source of secondary scoring for the Capitals next season, but he won't be a desirable option in most fantasy formats due to his lack of offensive upside.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Not expected to be given qualifying offer

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/25/18) The Capitals are not expected to tender a qualifying offer to Smith-Pelly, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The move is a bit of a surprise given that Smith-Pelly was such an important role player during their Stanley Cup run and comes even after Washington freed up cap space at the Draft to re-sign their key free agents. As Khurshudyan writes, the dynamics of arbitration seem to concern management that, given the fourth-liner's seven-goal postseason performance, a third-party would dispense a one- or two-year deal that would be beyond what the team is comfortable with.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Matches season total with seven playoff goals

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/8/18) Smith-Pelly potted his seventh goal of the postseason in Thursday's 4-3, championship-clinching win over Vegas.

Smith-Pelly's scoring was a major part of Washington's success, as his seven goals in 24 games during this run to the Stanley Cup matched his total from 75 regular-season games. His tally in this one tied the scored with 10:08 remaining, setting the stage for Lars Eller to break that tie less than three minutes later.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Snipes beautiful goal-scorer's goal in win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/2/18) Smith-Pelly scored a beautiful goal in the Capitals' 3-1 win over the Golden Knights on Saturday.

Smith-Pelly took the pass behind him and dragged it across the crease before lifting it top shelf to give the Caps a 3-1 lead. It was his sixth goal of the postseason. His goal made up for his early goalie interference penalty -- his collision with Marc-Andre Fleury erased what would have been the opening goal. Smith-Pelly is showing that he's not just a fourth-line meathead, but a valuable part of a winning team.

Capitals' Devante Smith-Pelly: Ready for Stanley Cup Finals

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/26/18) Smith-Pelly (neck) said he'll play Monday in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals versus the Golden Knights, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.

Smith-Pelly's evidently none the worse for wear after taking a shot to the back of his neck in the first period of Wednesday's Game 7 triumph over the Lightning. While it's conceivable that the bottom-six winger could've returned for that game, he didn't because the Capitals had a three-goal cushion when he departed. Smith-Pelley has accrued four goals and an assist over 19 games in these playoffs.
