  • Capitals' Paul Carey: Reaches deal with Rangers

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/1/17) Carey signed a one-year, $650,000 contract with the Rangers.

Carey spent a majority of 2016-17 playing for AHL Hershey, where he notched 55 points in 55 games and an impressive plus-14 rating. The 28-year-old center has only played in 32 NHL games over the past four seasons, and he only has one goal and one assist to show for it. He's likely destined to be a minor-league player again, only being called up for injury relief.

Capitals' Paul Carey: Waived by Washington

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/11/17) Carey was placed on waivers Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

If he clears waivers, Carey could rejoin AHL Hershey in its Calder Cup playoff run. However, with the 28-year-old set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, this waiving could be an indication that the Capitals are ready to move on from the forward after two seasons. Carey recorded no points in just six games playing a bottom-six role for Washington this season, so perhaps a change in scenery could do him some good.

Capitals' Paul Carey: Will be in lineup Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/29/17) Carey will make an appearance in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Saturday, CSN's JJ Regan reports.

The 28-year-old pivot has only played in three games since the calendar flipped to 2017, and he'll be tagging into a playoff match for the first time since he was a member of the Avalanche in 2013-14. Washington is hoping that his speed and versatility jump-starts a fourth line that has been lackluster since the playoffs began. Brett Connolly reportedly takes a seat in this one.

Capitals' Paul Carey: Returns to D.C.

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/24/17) Carey was recalled from AHL Hershey on Friday, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

Yeah, averaging a point per game in the minors -- as has been the case for Carey -- will get you some looks from the big club. However, he's failed to garner a substantial role in the NHL since the Avalanche originally called his name in the fifth round of the 2007 draft.

    Capitals' Paul Carey: Demoted Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/7/17) Carey was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Tuesday.

The former Boston College Eagle went scoreless in the one game he suited up for since being recalled March 1, his fourth contest in the NHL this season. Carey has been a near point-per-game player in the minors this season, tallying 44 through 48 games, and he could be recalled later in the regular season or postseason to provide depth for the Caps.
