  • Canadiens' Nikita Scherbak: Pots first since callup

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8:58 am ET) Scherbak scored a goal on four shots over 16:23 of ice time in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Vegas.

Alex Galchenyuk's nifty puck handling led to a breakaway for Scherbak, who pulled the Golden Knights' Marc-André Fleury out of position and then reached back to put the puck behind him -- a goal-scorer's goal. The 21-year-old nearly had a second goal, but clanged a post in the third period. He's had four premium scoring chances over the last two games.

Canadiens' Nikita Scherbak: Generates chances Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/16/18) Scherbak had one shot on goal, one hit and one blocked shot while finishing plus-1 over 15:14 of ice time in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Coyotes.

The 21-year-old Scherbak hasn't made a scoresheet appearance over the last four games, but had a couple of opportunities Thursday. Arizona goalie Antti Raanta robbed Scherbak of a goal in the first period, then in the third period, the forward lifted a shot over a fallen Raanta before a diving Max Domi swatted the puck away. He's shown enough in this recent six-game call-up to stick in the NHL for the remainder of the season, however, his scoring output will be tempered by Montreal's popgun attack.

Canadiens' Nikita Scherbak: Contributes in win again

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/4/18) Scherbak had a power-play assist, five shots on net, one hit and two blocked shots in Sunday's 4-1 win over Ottawa.

The 22-year-old Russian has an assist in each of his two games played -- both on the power play. In a nod toward what Montreal can expect next season, Scherbak combined with 19-year-old Victor Mete to set up 22-year-old Artturi Lehkonen's first power-play goal of the season. While a four-point sweep this weekend moves Montreal closer to eighth place in the Eastern Conference, the organization is playing out the string this season with an eye toward 2018-19. It's safe to assume Scherbak will never play in the AHL again.

Canadiens' Nikita Scherbak: Nabs point, power-play time in debut

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/4/18) Scherbak had a power-play assist and two hits over 10:41 of ice time in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Ducks.

Scherbak made his season debut for Montreal after getting the call from AHL Laval on Friday. The young forward landed a plum assignment, skating on a line with Jonathan Drouin and Alex Galchenyuk, and was given 2:55 of power-play ice time. With reality smacking the Habs in the face -- they're expected to make tee times in April instead of playoff plans -- Scherbak should stay up with Montreal for the rest of the season.

Canadiens' Nikita Scherbak: In lineup Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/3/18) Scherbak will be in uniform for Saturday afternoon's game against the Ducks.

Scherbak was called up from AHL Laval on Friday and will skate on a line with Jonathan Drouin and Alex Galchenyuk, replacing Jacob De La Rose. The 2014 first-round draft pick's arrival signals an organizational shift in focus to the 2018-19 season. As part of that slightly longer-term focus, we expect the Canadiens to be sellers at the trade deadline. Promoting Scherbak may presage the departure of Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec.
