Deontay Wilder gets new opponent for return to boxing in November
The WBC heavyweight champ has a fresh foe after Luis Ortiz tested positive for a banned substance
Deontay Wilder will still be fighting on Nov. 4 after all. Showtime Sports announced Thursday that Wilder (38-0, 37 knockouts) will take on Bermane Stiverne in the main event after Luis Ortiz was forced to withdraw after testing positive for a banned substance in the VADA testing pool. Wilder toppled Stiverne in 2015 to earn the WBC heavyweight title and is the only opponent the heavy-handed Alabama native has failed to knockout.
"Stiverne asked for it, so he's going to get it," Wilder said in a statement. "Whatever happens happens. Ask and you shall receive. I'm relieved to be getting my mandatory out of the way. At least now I won't have to deal with that down the road.
"In the first fight, I broke my hand in the third round, and I still dominated. That was a lot of the reason why it went the distance. This time it's a different day, different time and different fight. This time it won't end well for him.
"Despite all of these obstacles that are thrown in my path, it still will not stop me from reaching my ultimate goal, which is to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world."
Stiverne was scheduled to take on Dominic Breazeale on the undercard of his main event. He has fought just once since losing to Wilder in January 2015, beating Derric Rossy by unanimous decision in November 2015. Wilder is coming off a fifth-round TKO of Gerald Washington in February.
