Valparaiso stuns Purdue in 2OT on Justus McNair buzzer-beater
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Justus McNair hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in double overtime, and Valparaiso Beacons stunned Purdue Boilermakers 83-80 on Friday night.
McNair's winner came after Rakim Chaney buried a 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime to tie it 70-all.
Chaney, a sophomore, led Valparaiso (2-0) with a career-high 35 points on 14-for-22 shooting with four 3s. He added eight rebounds and six assists. McNair scored 17 and had missed three from distance until sinking the winner. McNair's jumper forced OT tied at 56-all.
JT Pettigrew totaled 11 points and eight rebounds for the Beacons.
Daniel Jacobsen scored a career-best 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Boilermakers (0-2). The 7-foot-4 junior made 9 of 13 shots and 10 of 12 free throws. C.J. Cox had 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Gicarri Harris scored 11.
Jack Benter buried a 3-pointer to give Purdue a 15-4 lead in the first 10 minutes. Jacobsen totaled 11 points by halftime and the Boilermakers led 32-20.
Chaney sank a 3-pointer to tie it 56-all with 1:46 left in regulation. Jacobsen made two at the foul line, but McNair's basket forced OT.
Jacobsen hit two more free throws 20 seconds into the extra period and Purdue stayed in front until Chaney hit a 3-pointer with 1 second left to force a second OT tied at 70.
Purdue was coming off a 78-72 loss to 15th-ranked Gonzaga in a season opener in Las Vegas. The Boilermakers are 0-2 for the first time since the 1976-77 season.

Purdue: Hosts Illinois State on Monday.
