Local authorities issued a felony arrest warrant for suspended Creighton senior Maurice Watson Jr. on Thursday night, according to the Omaha World-Herald. The charge is first-degree sexual assault, per the report.

Watson, whose college career is over because of a torn ACL, has been under investigation and he is suspended from all team activity. The World-Herald reports the police were alerted to the allegations less than 12 hours after the incident in question took place.

According to a police report, a 19-year-old woman told an Omaha police officer that she had been sexually assaulted in the bathroom of a residence about 3 a.m. Feb. 4. The woman filed the report shortly after 10:30 a.m. that day.

The World-Herald broke the story Thursday morning, citing a source “with knowledge that a police investigation had been launched.” Watson has been subject to disciplinary action by the school since Feb. 13. Creighton said the suspension was because of “alleged actions that are contrary to university policies and core values.”

The alleged assault occurred earlier in February. The alleged victim is a student at Creighton, according to the World-Herald source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity.

Creighton issued a statement, which said, “No additional information regarding the suspension will be released at this time. The university treats all students fairly and equally, and values their privacy.”

Watson will not be involved in Creighton’s forthcoming Senior Day festivities Tuesday before Creighton’s final home game of the season, against St. John’s.

“Given the tremendous support for Creighton men’s basketball by its fans, university officials feel it is necessary to share the reason behind Watson’s absence from the upcoming event,” the statement reads.

The allegation comes at a time of heightened awareness of sexual assault at Creighton.

Just Wednesday, the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson announced to the campus the makeup of an approximately 25-member committee to look at the university’s policies on sexual assault.

And late last week, about 30 students held a “Yes Means Yes” rally on campus to emphasize the importance of consent in sexual relations.

A Creighton student has alleged that she was sexually assaulted in November by another student and that Creighton administrators didn’t support her. In a blog on the subject, the student asked people to contact Hendrickson, Creighton’s president, to demand that Creighton policies, training and education be changed to emphasize the importance of clear consent.

Hendrickson, who said that case was handled appropriately, nevertheless agreed to form the committee. The committee isn’t expected to issue findings for weeks.

Watson’s season ended on Jan. 16, when he suffered a torn ACL at Xavier. The Bluejays are 4-5 since the injury. He was leading the nation in assists (8.5 per game) at the time and had helped lead Creighton to an 18-1 start. Watson had surgery to repair the ACL in early February. Creighton fell 68-66 at home Wednesday night to Providence. The Bluejays play at Villanova on Saturday.
