Nebraska (-7) at Illinois: It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Cornhuskers as news broke that it is under NCAA investigation for improper use of analysts and holding illegal off-campus workouts. A conference win over Illinois would certainly make things a little bit more comfortable for coach Scott Frost, which is exactly what oddsmakers are expecting. Meanwhile, Bret Bielema will look to spring an upset in his first game at his new gig as he returns to the Big Ten.
UConn at Fresno State (-27.5): The Huskies didn't play last year due to COVID-19 and have never played a game in the state of California. Needless to say, this is going to be tough for Randy Edsall's squad. Jake Haener will return under center for a Bulldogs team that is hoping to post its first winning season since 2018. Oddsmakers clearly see the UConn layoff and experience for Fresno State as big factors.
Hawaii at UCLA (-17): Dorian Thompson-Robinson is back for a Bruins team that hasn't performed the way many expected when Chip Kelly took over the program in 2018. Oddsmakers are expecting a big win over a Rainbow Warriors squad that will have veteran quarterback Chevan Cordeiro back after he led them to their second straight winning season a year ago. UCLA lost all four games by six or fewer points last season but hasn't won a season-opener during Kelly's tenure.
UTEP (-9) at New Mexico State: The Aggies didn't play last fall and went 1-1 in the spring, so it's safe to assume that they'll probably be a little bit rusty. With that said, laying nine points with a team that went 3-5 last season is an aggressive play. It likely has to do with the fact that the Miners return all 11 starters on offense and eight on defense.
