Marco Rubio knows that college football fans in Florida want to hear opinions. You can't flip back and forth in a state that has some of the best football talent and most prominent college football teams in the country.

Rubio was asked about football during a radio hit in Iowa about the Gators, Hurricanes and Seminoles, the Florida undergrad and Miami law school graduate had no problems talking some smack.

"Look, I don’t have anything against Florida State," Rubio said. "I think there has to be a school where people that can’t get into Florida can go to college. And that’s why we have Florida State."

The fun remarks lingered for a few days before catching on with Florida State fans, which led to a response from university president John Thrasher."

"He's a nice kid," Thrasher said of Rubio. "I'm sure he's frustrated by his low standing in the polls, which I believe could be a reflection of where he got his education."

Rubio, on Tuesday, wanted to remind everyone that college football smack talk ain't exactly platforms or policy material.

Rubio, a Miami native, is a self-proclaimed Gators fan who still roots for his hometown Hurricanes. But you can't claim all three teams in Florida. That kind of ambiguity is no way to win a primary in the Sunshine State.
