Big Blue Nation wanted checkerboard end zones, so Kentucky will give Big Blue Nation a pair of checkerboard end zones.

Kentucky's renovation to Commonwealth Stadium, at an estimated cost of around $110 million, focuses much more on upgrades rather than expansion. In fact, the projected capacity of the new stadium is expected to be less than its previous total of 62,093.

But as fancy as the new press box, club seats, bathrooms, lights and exterior facade will be, fans were particularly excited to see a new field design, featuring two-tone blue checkerboard end zones.

Kentucky, of course, will not be the first or only SEC team to sport the end zone concept. Tennessee had orange-and-white checkerboard endzones as far back as 1964, permanently since 1989.

The new Commonwealth Stadium will make its debut on Sept. 5 for the Wildcats' season opener against Louisiana.
