The senior lost the starting job with an injury in the second game of 2015
Update: Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire has been given his release to transfer, but the list of possible landing spots has been reduced.
Zaire told ESPN on Wednesday that he "cannot transfer to teams on Notre Dame's upcoming schedule, with the exception of North Carolina." Notre Dame plays Temple, Georgia, Boston College, Michigan State, Miami (OH), North Carolina, USC, NC State, Wake Forest, Miami (FL), Navy and Stanford next year.
Michigan State was previously listed as a possible option for Zaire. A source told ESPN that Zaire is looking at Florida, Michigan State, Pitt and Wisconsin.

Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire will reportedly seek other options for his final year of eligibility, seeking a transfer from the Fighting Irish program.
According to Irish Illustrated, Zaire is scheduled to meet with Brian Kelly on Wednesday morning, "at which point Zaire should get his formal release from the University to pursue a graduate transfer."
Irish Illustrated also offered a few potential landing spots for Zaire, mentioning Florida, Pittsburgh, Michigan State and Wisconsin as "primary contenders."
Zaire was named the starting quarterback prior to the start of the 2015 season, played great against Texas in the opener then suffered a season-ending injury against Virginia in the second game of the season. Deshone Kizer, the starter for the remainder of the 2015 season, beat out Zaire in 2016 after both players got a look in the 50-47 double-overtime loss to the Longhorns in Austin.
Zaire joins Everett Golson, Gunner Kiel and Dayne Crist as quarterbacks to leave Notre Dame since Brian Kelly took over as head coach prior to the 2010 season.
